Apple today unveiled its new Power Mac G4 product line--each featuring dual PowerPC G4 processors, the new Xserve high-performance architecture with support for up to 2GB of Double Data Rate (DDR) memory at up to 333 MHz, an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card with 64MB of DDR SDRAM and an "enhanced enclosure with increased storage up to nearly half a terabyte." The new Power Macs also ship with Mac OS X "Jaguar" pre-installed. The Power Mac dual 867 MHz and dual 1 GHz processor models are available this week, while the dual 1.25 GHz processor Power Mac G4 is expected to be available in the second half of September.
- dual 867MHz/nVidia GeForce4 MX with 32MB/256MB/60GB 7,200 rpm ATA drive/Combo Drive/1MB DDR L3 Cache--$1,699
- dual 1GHz/256MB/ATI Radeon 9000 Pro with 64MB/256MB/80GB 7,200 rpm ATA drive/SuperDrive/1MB DDR L3 Cache--$2,499
- dual 1.25GHz/512MB/ATI Radeon 9000 Pro with 64MB/512MB/120GB 7,200 rpm ATA drive/SuperDrive/2MB DDR L3 Cache--$3,299
- The dual-867MHz model has a 133MHz system bus, while the dual-1GHz and dual-1.25MHz models have 167MHz (requiring faster memory).
- The low-end and mid-range models feature 1MB of DDR L3 cache per processor, while the high-end model offers 2MB of DDR L3 per processor.
- The new Power Macs use the Xserve architecture for support of up to 2GB of memory via four slots.
- The ATI Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card has 64MB of DDR SDRAM across a quad-pipe architecture that delivers four parallel, pixel rendering pipelines, while the NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti graphics card, available as BTO, has a 128MB frame buffer of DDR SDRAM.
- The Power Macs have dual ATA interfaces, one Ultra ATA/100 and one Ultra ATA/66, and you can put two drives on each interface for a total of four internal hard drives.
- The new Power Mac G4 case now includes support for four 3.5" internal drive bays and two optical drive bays.
- There are now four Power Mac models in the educational channel. The low-end Power Mac, which has a single 867MHz processor, still uses the old casing and sells for $1,252. The three other Powermacs are all dual, weighing in at 867, 1Ghz and 1.25Ghz, priced at $1,597, $2,349, and $3,101 respectively.
