Apple Store in Edina, MN, to open soon

updated 04:50 pm EDT, Mon August 12, 2002

Apple is opening a new retail store in the Southdale Mall in Edina, Minnesota, notes a reader. "For those who have never been in Minnesota, Edina is a well-to-do neighborhood with lots of retail shopping and tons of Office complexes."

    WHAT??

But the mall of america is around 5 miles away. What is the point of this?

    That's dumb.

As an Apple shareholder, I think highly of the retail stores. But Southdale is about 15 minutes from the Mall of America, where they've had a store for a year. The same people shop in both places.

If feel the Twin Cities market has enough interest for two stores, why not open one in the northern suburbs? Those folks aren't as likely to go to the MoA.

    What the ??

Although Edina is a well-to-do neighborhood, the Southdale Mall is kind of dumpy compared to other Apple Store locations. I can understand it if Apple is looking to get a great deal on floorspace, but a location downtown on the Nicolette Mall would make better sense from a brand standpoint.

And what's up with another store so close to the Mall of America?

    It could be worse

Southdale in Edina? Dumpy? You could buy your Mac, then head up to the Convention Grill at 44th and France for the world's best shakes, fries, and burgers. Sounds like a perfect day to this displaced Upper Midwesterner.

Seriously, I suspect the stores (Marshall Field's aka Dayton's, etc.) draw different customers than the MOA. When I was there, at least, the lack of a Dayton's was a good reason for many people to skip the MOA and go to Southdale. The MOA is a pain to get in and out of.

Meanwhile, here in Boston, one of our Apple stores is in Peabody, the other in the Cambridgeside Galleria. Neither exactly measures up to SoHo. I'll take either MN location over these any day.

    Not really

There are quite a few people in the Minneapolis area who will not go to the Mall of America. It is also estimated that more than 50% of sales in MoA stores are to short term touristas. Many who fly into the nearby airport on charters and are bussed over, given valet shopping cart service to get their packages back home, then back to the airport. A Southdale location with a small store might not be that bad an idea. I wouldn't exactly call Southdale "dumpy" either, although it definitely isn't a Fashion Island ala Newport Beach.

Odd historical Fact: Southdale was the first fully enclosed shopping mall in the country.

    Very cool !

With family in southeastern Minneapolis, I would love to have an Apple store in that quadrant when I visit there. But you'd have to be *giving away* Macs to get me to figure out the MOA.

    All missing point

Most of you are missing the point. I agree Southdale is not as "hip" as the MOA. But Southdale is near 10 of thousands of business workers in nearby workers. From Best buy's new & staggeringly large HQ all the way to Eden Prairie and St. Louis Park. It's a heavy business/industrial Area.

    Rats!

I am so disappointed. I faithfully submitted my resume on-line for several different positions at the store and I was never called back. :-(
