XLR8 shuts down

updated 12:50 pm EDT, Sat August 10, 2002

Several readers write about a note on XLR8's Website, indicating the company has closed its doors: "XLR8, Inc. has closed its doors and is no longer in business. There is no technical or warranty support available. We apologize for any inconvenience."

    To bad..
Having limited options in the Mac market is bad enough without more suppliers closing up shop.

    what the h***...?

well, this came as a shock to me. i had been looking into items they were selling like the interview cable, the ghz upgrade for cube, etc.

i can't comment on them one way or another, but i guess the mac market isn't capable of supporting more than 2 upgrade manufacturers at any one time (newer just came back, which i guess pushed xlr8 out?)

    I didn't know you could

offer a warranty and then end it like that. Does the company have the option to continue their warranty support when they close? Interesting.

    Is the mac platform..

..just too difficult to make things for?, or is it simply the volume of intel based hardware in use that gets the costs down?

I hope they bounce back even though I don't want any of their products at the moment.

    That's a shame.

I was actually looking forward to getting the dual CPU upgrade for my DP500; nobody else seems to really offer an upgrade, though admittedly I'm disappointed that it's only a 50MHz/cpu upgrade (even though it's a later rev of the G4 chip architecture, which should theoretically give you a boost at the same CPU mhz...)

Unfortunate. Hopefully someone else will pick it up.

    Cube CPU upgrade

If you're still looking for a CPU upgrade for the cube, you can still look at Sonnet's 800MHz and 1000MHz single-CPU upgrades, to be released this month. I've pre-ordered the 1000MHz CPU upgrade for my gigabit ethernet G4-400 tower, looking forward to it...

    I'm SCREWED!!!

uh oh. i purchased a Sawtooth 550MHz upgrade from them in May. It worked fine until 26 July - kernel panic followed by inability to boot. XLR8 support sent a replacement 550MHz upgrade but it doesn't work either. So, I've been without my Mac at work for 2 weeks - calling and emailing XLR8 every day. They have my working 350MHz chip and I have two dead 550MHz chips.

I feared this. But had hoped they were simply on vacation.... with no message indicating such on their phone service or site....doh! Still, I dunno how I could have avoided it other than buying a processor upgrade from some other company instead. I wish I hadn't broken my Magic 8-Ball! Ha!

Yeah, theres a lot of guys out there that are better looking, but only a handful are as stupid as me! So I got that to comfort me I guess. tee hee.

I wonder if there any guides on the net for turning G4 towers into fish tanks?
