DVD+RW Alliance approves 4x DVD+R spec

The DVD+RW Alliance today announced the specifications for 4x DVD+R recording speeds and for the smaller 8cm DVD+RW/+R media, allowing DVD recorders and data drives to record at 44 Mb/sec for improved performance. The 8cm form factor is designed to enable compatibility with existing PCs with DVD-ROM and DVD players and offers disc capacities of 1.46GB. Pioneer, part of the DVD Forum and manufacturer of Apple's SuperDrives, recently said it would introduce products based on the 4X DVD-R spec, which directly competes with the DVD+RW/+R format, later this year. DVD Forum says that the 4X DVD-R spec is expected to be approved next month.

"The 8cm form factor is designed to enable compatibility with existing PCs with DVD-ROM and DVD players..."
I thought the "+" format itself was not compatible with current DVD-ROM drives and DVD players. How does making the disc smaller do anything?

    uh...

anyone know a place where i can read up on what the difference is in all these competing optical standards, like dvd-r, dvd+r, cd-rw, cd+rw, etc. i am getting seriously confused with what is supposedly compatible with what.

    DVD Compatibility Article

Here is the best article I've seen to date. It shows, again, what we've always known. When it comes to compatibility, DVD-R/RW is far superior to DVD+R/RW.

    Faulty or biased?

Copied directly from the article referred to by TechLarry:
    Conclusion #4:
DVD-RW and DVD+RW are very similar

If you look at the data in Figures 5, 6, and 7, you can see that the overall compatibility of DVD-RW and DVD+RW is very similar, and probably within the margin of error of the test. The compatibility ratings of DVD-RW and DVD+RW are lower than DVD-R because many older DVD players won’t read rewritable formats at all.
    ----------------------------------
Seems to me there's a pretty big difference between "far superior" and "very similar".
Not to mention that the article is several months old and doesn't even include a comparison using +R media.

    RW always had problems

Even back in CD days, there were problems with CD-RW. It's just that (I think) -RW is easier to incoporate into DVD-ROM drives than +RW mainly b/c of history. Basically, -R and -RW are closer related and since -R can be read in current DVD-ROM drives, -RW is more compatible than +RW. Personally, I like the DVD-RAM concept, but since it never caught on,the technology there is years old and can't compete with R and RW technology (esp since no one is putting money into RAM R&D).
