Afternoon tech news: US execs could face jail time if they attempt to protect their copyrighted material under proposed legislation that would allow intellectual property owners to use technical measures to prevent copyright infringement; IBM, Sony and Toshiba have revealed the inner workings of a mysterious new multimedia processor called the "Cell," which could end up inside the PlayStation 3 game console, and could be part of future server chips from IBM; and although Canon has declined to do so, Lexmark may manufacture printers for Dell, who is looking to enter the printer business.

    re: "old news"

So? It's still a great concept, even if they are not the first to apply it.

    Cheap Power4?

Looks like a nice budget Power4 idea to me. Might be a nice addition in the future for a desktop. If its going in a PS3 it will fit the budget for a desktop. Hmmm. Possible 'option' in the future? Hmmm only time will tell

    Reminds Me

The cell chip design reminds of a processor called the transputer that I herd about in '87 or '88. The big difference is that the cell will have all the processor cores in one chip instead of multible chips connecet by multible high speed serial pathways. The full article on the cell chip as other similairies with the transputer.

    Switch?

With chips like this in the pipe, why would Apple ever switch to x86?

    Re: Switch

No doubt... this thing can perform 100 times more floating point operations (per second) than a 2.5 Ghz P4. If nothing else, this tells us that there is a lot more muscle out there, and that IBM makes one h*** of a chip!
