AirPort BS firmware updated for Jaguar

updated 12:45 pm EDT, Tue August 6, 2002

Apple's AirPort Base Station firmware 4.0.6 is designed for the Snow (dual-Ethernet) base stations, and does not support the Graphite base station. The Airport Admin Utility has improved scanning for base stations across local subnets, improving the ability for AirPort computers to find base stations while plugged into the LAN port. It also improves ompatibility with Internet service providers or other home router products that use private 10.0.0.x or 10.0.1.x addresses in bridge mode, and also brings support for Rendezvous-enabled applications in Mac OS X v10.2.

    Airport and Rendevous

It seems that Rendevous is going to replace the Software base station function lost in OS X. Any thoughts out there?

    Jaguar has a software BS

Jaguar includes a software BS (in the System Preferences under Sharing). Rendevous is not meant as a replacement for software BS.

Software base stations are used to distribute network connections to other computers. Rendevous' job is to discover what services a computer is providing automatically. So once your (base station/ethernet cable/modem) supplies a device with its network conneciton, Rendevous asks all other computers on that same network what services they are providing, so once your computer is connected to the network it knows what computers are sharing their iTunes playlists, sharing their Pictures folders, etc. Rendevous can also be used to automatically setup two computer's networking configurations without intervention. For example, you plug in two computers via a crossover Ethernet cable, and want to share files with them. Rendevous will automatically assign them network addresses without a DHCP server.

    My Graphite base

I'm guessing this means that computers using 10.0.1.x addresses will be able to see each other via rendezvous but not see things with IPs beyond that subnet, such as one of my computers also on the network but using another ISP provided IP...

    Graphite!?

Does this firmware update mean, that with the graphite you will not be able to use rendezvous?
Also where is the VPN and dial-in support for the graphite?

    Blow me Apple

Probably so I'll bet. This is why I will probably eventually switch to Windows and a PC. I don't have the money to keep upgrading my hardware every time Apple upgrades and decides to leave their "older" products behind. It doesn't cost anything to call Microsoft for the code to XP. Apple has a bad "upgrade of die" mentality now.

    All this and .mac too!

    Ditto on the Graphite!

Hey.. can anyone be clear that a Rendezvous-enabled 10.2 will work with my Graphite base station? Gheez this freaking sux if I have to upgrade my 6 month old graphite base station before any application running Rendezvous will work.

Some please clear up the story. I can live with limted function and less encryption.. but to not work at all? Does anyone else feel screwed?

    (GRRRRRRRRR) DOWN MINIME!

    RE:Blow Me Apple

Go buy a PC....Get off this forum. I love it when Mac users threaten to buy PCs when Apple does something they don't like. Has your base station done everything that Apple said it was originally supposted to do? Then STFU! WWWAaaaaa MY BASE STATION DOESN'T SUPPORT A PROTOCAL THAT HASN'T BEEN RELEASED TO ALLOW ME TO RUN PROGRAMS THAT DON'T EXIST. APPLE SUX CAUSE I'M A BRAINLESS TWIT. Do you think it's any better on the other side. My solice comes the fact that someday you will have to put up with your decision to become Bill's b*tch, And you will have to put up and shut up because what choice do you have when your a windows user.

    Have a Very Nice Day!
