Apple ships new 20GB iPods to retail

updated 01:45 pm EDT, Fri August 2, 2002

Apple has begun shipment of the new 20GB iPods to some of its retail outlets. The Apple Store Rockingham Park notified customers who pre-ordered the unit that it had received the first "small shipment" of 20GB iPods. The Apple Store Online currently lists a 2-3 week estimated ship date for new orders of the $500 MP3 player. The new iPods feature updated software (for contact management and calendaring) , a new touch-sensitive scroll wheel, a clip-on wired remote control, a designer carrying case, new headphones, and a FireWire port cover.

    I have mine!

The Apple Store at Rockingham Park (Salem, NH) called me just after 11 AM EDT to say the 20 Gig iPod was in and did I still want it. You didn't have to ask me twice. All songs loaded and awaiting a full charge.
Remote is sweet. Case does not let you get at the jog wheel but the remote makes that no longer an issue. These are the best! Thanks Apple!

Oh man, I am so jealous!

I ordered mine from the show floor at macworld. Anxiously awaiting word on shipment.

    I have mine! (cont'd)

OK, been using it now for a couple of hours. Remote doesn't always work properly. Still trying to get the hang of it. There is a button on it to disable accidently hitting the buttons.
Earphones seem like last ones. Ear bud covers do not stay on so I will probably just remove them (or loose them first).
    Overall, sound quality is great.

    Not just Rockingham

I just picked one up at the Glendale, CA store. They didn't have them out on the floor, I had to ask for it and they got it from the back room. I didn't preorder it; AFAIK the Glendale store didn't accept preorders for it.

    hmm, let's see...

    > $500 for an iPod? Must be nice to have that kind of scratch...

Well, like most americans, you could drive a giant SUV that costs 35K and gets 10mpg. You could have a mortgage way out of your range. You could have a 50inch projection TV to watch the big game. Or you could just be frugal and spend that kind of "scratch" on something that truly has value and utlity. If you can't afford on iPod, then quite complaining and get out and get a job like everyone else!
