eWeek: Quark to debut XPress 6 in 2003

updated 07:30 pm EDT, Thu August 1, 2002

Quark is a readying major upgrade to its QuarkXPress publishing software, according to eWeek. While competing developers like Adobe transition to Mac OS X with native applications, QuarkXPress 5.0 -- a key player in the publishing industry -- remains available for 'Classic' versions of the Mac OS only. The article eWeek suggests that XPress 6.0 for Mac OS X (and Windows) may debut early next year, possibly being previewed at January's Macworld San Francisco. Version 6 is expected to include a bevy of new features, but may also have some shortcomings, such as a lack of support for older third-part plug-ins.

    Jan 03 release? Right....

Quark 5 was released almost 2 years later than they planned. Which means we can look forward to removing Classic from our OS X machines by 2005!

    long walk...short pier

Quark had it's day but they just don't care about their customers or the peeps that sell the product.

If they fix some of the inconsistent user interface issues that have plagues EVERY previous version then maybe I'll use them again. For now, I have switched to InDesign and enjoy it almost as much as the switch to OS X. Not even looking back to either Classic or Xpress any time soon.

first they release Quark 5..then they cut the price in half and won't refund people who bought the software a week before now they announce Quark 6 and they'll prolly charge us a foot and a leg. Moving to InDesign...I suggest u all do as well.

    hear, hear

Quark is TERRIBLE, even in Classic. To all the hangers on, just think about this -- I got into using Quark over ten years ago when it was the only thing to use, hence the best. What version was available then? 3.31 ... the jump to 4 took place about 1999-2000 with little revision done since then. All the good XTensions are still third party which can be extremely costly. If you are going OS X, the only thing to recommend is InDesign, which in my opinion has pushed so far past Quark it's a wonder Quark is still a contender.

Didn't Quark "demo" an OS X version of Quark at last years' NEW YORK MacWorld??? What the 'ell is taking THIS LONG?!?

Know Photoshop? Know Illustrator? Good -- then you know InDesign. And to all the remaining service bureaus out there that are still Quark-centric, please switch to InDesign. You'll be doing the Mac community so much service if you do. Quark is losing out big time.

    Switch to OSX

We have yet to switch to OSX, and do not see it happening any time in the near future.

    Why?

Well, it's not really due to Quark...which is what we use, I personally do not care for indesign.

But rather due to Microsoft Outlook 2001. This software still runs in classic and not native to OSX, and since it is the only piece of software that is integrated with Microsoft Exchange Server, we are stuck waiting for an OSX version.

Since this is an app that runs on our machines all day, I do not feel any need to switch to X just to have 9 run all day. Buggy, buggy, buggy.

So I figure, even though it may take Quark forever to release 6, it may still happen before Outlook 2001.

    Maybe then we'll switch over

    Sorry

to say but I much prefer Quark to InDesign. I find Quark 5 very good and even if it lacks many features ID has, I think it's still the best layout app around. One thing Adobe needs to learn is we don't need all these floating palettes filling our screens. Quark has the great advantage to remain simple, yet very efficient. All our templates are made in Quark. Using third-party XTensions (most of them freeware)

    Re: Switch to OS X

Early reports of 10.2 (Jaguar) reported that the Mail app, would have support for connecting to MS Exchange servers. If that's true, I suggest you get a copy of 10.2 when it hits the street to do some testing. If it IS compatible with Exchange servers, then you can finally move to OS X, and I suggest you do. There is such a thing as ROI, and the ROI for moving to OS X will pay off. Sure, it's costly at first, to buy OS licenses, and all native software upgrades (PS 7, AI10, Office, etc) but in the end, the time saved and the efficiences gained will be well worth it.

If you'd rather stay wth QXP, then wait for that to make the move. But seriously, I wouldn't hold my breadth 'til January, if Quark's past history is any indication.

    Sorry... (end)

Oops, I hit the enter key by mistake ! So, as I was saying :
Using third-party XTensions (most of them freeware) and AppleScript, we work very fast. I doubt we could do any better using ID.
Too bad we can't use Quark 5 in OS X but even if we could, there are still problems we can't solve in OS X: font conflicts to begin with.

    Keep it up, Quark

While everyone is scrambling to jump on the OS X bandwagon, Quark will be two years behind. InDesign will have already come out with a bunch of fixes. Quark will lag behind, AGAIN, for another year. This is the age of customer service and support. Come on...!

    Exchange servers & Mail

Apple's new "Mail" program will be able to use Exchange servers only in that it will speak IMAP for mail delivery.

Exchange 2001 for Classic MacOS does calendaring with Exchange servers, which is what most corporations use Exchange for. If Entourage or iCal would allow us to use an Exchange server for calendaring, I would never again boot Classic on my iBook.
