Steve Jobs may be distracted by his Gulfstream V jet and his option for a split-adjusted 20 million shares, according to a Bloomberg article that talks about Apple's fallen stock and Steve Jobs' the "largest option ever given to any CEO on a single day."

    Once again...

Once again the analysts have proven that they have their heads up their collective ***es... This article once again seems to imply that Apple is never going to recover.

You have to give the author credit for imagination and creativity, somehow managing to tie an airplane to Apple's recent downturn in the markets.

I wonder what toys the CEOs of Dell, Gateway, Intel, and company have been playing with that's caused a drop for their companies.

Steve Job's options are now WORTHLESS thank you very much. He could just as easily buy common shares at the current price cheaper than his options, and still have ALL those options for when Apple's price gets pulled out of the 7th ring of h*** that analysts and pundits bone-headed comments threw it into.

Apple is actually doing better than Gateway/DELL/Compaq in many respects. Apple does have an inventory problem, but then so does everyone else (Gateway Country are now Ghost Town Country as no one seems to go into one).

Apple has much better products than other companies, but their selection is limited to just a few models whereas Compaq has like 500 variations of everything and lots of high end server products and low-low end consumer boxes as does DELL.

Apple needs to get Mac OS X out, it needs to get better G4 chips fromo Moto or simply needs to buy up all their IP and get some foundry to make them (maybe AMD).

This is the biggest problem right now, Apple needs better G4s than what Moto can deliver, but is locked in because only Moto owns the AltiVec IP and wont let anyone else make better G4s showing how bad Moto is managing their production of desktop CPUs.

The sluggish sales problems are not Apple, its the entire industry slowing down now that everyone already upgraded their machines that really needed to.

Once Mac OS X is out it will force many to upgrade from their 7200's and Quadras finally and that means more hardware sales as well as new OS sales. Mac OS X may also have several variations for consumer, pros and server uses.

Don't forget Apple will finally have a capable server OS and may put out a server-hardened G4 of some sort adding to the mix. A new mid-level portable is also quite likely.

it simply takes TIME to get all the pieces into position.

    No doubt

You are absolutely right. When OS X is released I will be getting rid of my PowerMac 7500 and getting a cheaper Cube (if they offer cheaper Cubes). OS X is deal breaker for me. I won't buy squat from Apple until it is released. I'm sick of OS 9 and explaining to everyone why if one application crashes the whole thing crashes, etc.

    not so fast

Sure the entire PC sector is under pressure, but the year-over-year numbers profit shortfalls for APPL are FAR greater than possibly Dell, Gateway, and Compaq combined. I can look up the numbers, but Gateway claimed something like an 8% drop from last year, while Apple has now twice lowered estimates to something like 50% less revenues than same time in 1999.

Oh yeah, I think SJ may have a MASSIVE tax bill with those options. If I'm not mistaken, when you accept options you then owe the taxes from that day, not some future date. So the options may go down to nothing, and you still owe the taxes from the initial offer -- yikes!

Also, I can't imagine that MANY people will throw out their older machines just for OSX. It will take some time for X to mature into a full featured stand alone OS. Improved hardware is a better reason, and the current prices should be the best reason of all for people to upgrade, not OSX.

    Take the plane away

They should take the plane away and sell it. He no longer deserves it. Besides, I'm sick and tired of him and Ellison thinking they're better than everybody else and breaking the curfew at San Jose airport. Steve needs a good lesson in humility. NeXT didn't do it (after all, he got off REAL easy!) maybe this drastic downturn will.

A large part of the hold-off in people buying new Apple hardware stems from the dumb, dumb, foisting of the ADC on all of their desktop G4s and displays, and that can be squarely blamed on Jobs trying to reinvent his one-connector NeXT Cube (with a product that has no apparent market or position in Apple's current business plan). The Cube drove the adoption of the ADC, and we end up with it on the meat-and-potatos high end G4 towers and displays as well. This is a much bigger problem than many people realise, it still needs fixing, and Jobs does have something to answer for here.

    Earnings & ADC

Actually, Apple brought in more money/made more sales this year than last. The problem that is biting them this year (why they aren't making as much profit) is inventory. They have to sell what they have at a loss so that they won't have any inventory left when they introduce new models.

As for the ADC connector, I'm sorry, but I love it. I seem to be the only one anywhere that does. With one connector I gained 2 more USB ports on 7 new macs that my work place bought. If we had to buy USB hubs instead that would have been more money that we really didn't have to spend. I understand the DVI issue, where people with older flat panels want to use with the new machines. But guess what? Flat Panel users are NOT in the majority. Personally I'm happy that I have 2 fewer cords to deal with when I have to play with the machines.

    ADC ?

Why is this an issue unless you have an LCD display that has DVI? After all, the Cube has a standard VGA port as well, last I check.
