KB: ADC/DVI adapter noise, QT MPEG-1 limits

updated 05:35 pm EDT, Wed July 31, 2002

", 0, 0);

Knowledge Base roundup: Apple's AppleCare Knowledge Base notes that DVD Studio Pro users must purchase a new QuickTime Pro 6 license, when upgrading to QuickTime 6, as the "Pro" version is required for some Studio Pro features; Apple's ADC to DVI Adapter produces an audible low volume high-pitch noise when the attached monitor is in sleep or shut down modes; Mac OS X root users may encounter file copy errors when attempting to copy files created by other users from a remote disk back to the local Mac OS X startup disk; and QuickTime 5 and 6 have limitations when working with MPEG-1 media, including disabled editing functions in QuickTime Player (with or without QT Pro).

    Why Upgrade

    If you are using DVD Studio Pro...certainly you are using Final Cut Pro. And right now Final Cut Pro doesn't "officially" Support QT6. Although I've had no problem with it. Has Premiere "officially" supported QT6 yet?

    quality?!?

    It is normal for you to hear the high-pitch noise when the monitor is in sleep mode or shut down. However, if this high-pitch noise is heard after the computer starts-up, or after waking from sleep, contact Apple support.

    Now thats QUALITY with a capital Q!

    mpeg 1 editing

    It would be nice of them to give us an explanation as to why exactly QT cannot edit mpeg 1 files. I keep having to use QT Player 3.0 in classic in order edit mpegs. It's not that it can't, it seems more to be that it won't let you for some reason yet to be revealed.

    MPEG 1 Audio

    Yeah WHY doesnt it work. When I bought QT Pro 6 I was hoping that c*** was fixed. When I open an MPEG file, I cannot export the audio whatsover. Even opening an MPA (MPEG Audio) file that has been removed from an MPEG will play in QT but you cant copy it to add to the video and export as a different file type.

    Cheap and freeware windows software can edit MPEGs properly, at least we should have an explanation on why Apple is unable to fix this

    And I thought it was

    because I didn't have "Pro." So I buy Pro, and I still can't edit mpeg's. Thanks a lot, Apple. A warning would've helped those of us who use such features before updating to QT6.

    Kinda a bummer

    It is a bit of a bummer that QT treats MP1 as a 2nd class citizen. I can understand it to a certain degree; due to the way the format is set up, editing a file directly tends to produce very funky MPEG video, even if stuff on Windows can do it--I know I've seen dozens of MPEG videos with all sorts of corrupt parts come from PC users.

    Still, offering transcoding at the very lease seems like it would be nice.

    Oh well, at least the fixed the silly bug in 5.0 for X that ate up all kinds of processor whenever a MPEG stream included layer 1 audio.

    anti-piracy

    I think MPEG1 support was taken out so that people won't be able to mess around with VCDs. I don't have any concrete evidence for this, but it's something that seems possible.

    MPEG1 Muxed, QT6 & bbDMUX

    This is coincidental, I was demuxing some MPEG-1's, and took a break to read MacNN.

    * Workaround for MPEG-1 Muxed, with QT Pro 6, under OS 9.x : * :
    Use an app called bbDMUX ( for Classic, I believe it is based on a similar program for OSX), and drag the MPEG1 on to this app, and it will seperate the ".m1v" and the ".m1a" portions of the MPEG1 video. Then convert the ".m1a" using SoundApp: I usually use QT audio IMA. Then open this resultant audio in QT6, and it can be "Add" or "Add Scaled" command is available. The the newly combined MPEG1 clip can be saved, or exported to any of the formats just like you want....
