Toshiba today "the world's first" high-performance 60GB drive for notebooks. The 2.5-inch hard disk drive features a disk rotational speed of 5,400rpm, a "slim" height of 9.5mm, a fluid dynamic bearing (FDB) motor for quiet operation, an Ultra DMA/100 interface and a 16MB internal buffer. Production is expected in September, although final pricing and availability is not yet available. (Toshiba currently sells a 4,200 rpm version of the Super Slimline 60GB drive.) Update: Several readers note that IBM is currently selling 5,400 rpm 60GB notebook drives with a street price of $335.

    stock drive

Why are they claiming this to be the first 5400 RPM drive that will work in the PBs? I ordered mine with a stock drive from Apple that is also a 60 GB 5400 RPM drive. Toshiba's announcement seems inaccurate.

    Whatchu talkin bout?

Sure, there have been 60GB/5400RPM laptop drives before, but were they this thin? This new Toshiba is a 9.5mm height drive. It will fit in an iBook or some of the 3rd party cases that the 12mm drives do not. I think that is what they mean.

Yes, IBM has had the 5400 RPM drives for a while, and yes they've been at 60GB for a while. The first here is the size, as someone mentioned, but that's not exactly how Toshiba's press release is written.

    Older drives were 12.5

and thus they would not fit in an iBook. 60G in an iBook ! super!! at last!!! (imagine how long that'll last before you have to upgrade)

    Do your homework!!

I see MacNN has updated the main story. 1) I say again: The IBM 60GB/5400RPM is not relevant to this story! It is a 12.5 mm that will not fit in the iBook. This Toshiba really is new because there is no drive of this capacity/RPM that will fit in an iBook. 2) Fluid-bearing drive. You want this! The older drives were noisy. The new fluid-bearing drives from IBM and Toshiba are practically silent as I can attest from having one in my Pismo.
