Architosh reports that Nvidia's was demonstrating its latest GPU demos under Jaguar at Siggraph: "Nvidia was showing a demo of the GeForce4 Titanium running their impressive demos (previously only available for Windows) under Jaguar (10.2) which now supports all of the vertex capabilities of the cards. Things were running at an impressive rate, full screen, on an Apple Cinema HD display (1920x1200)." It also notes that PTC is looking for user feedback on Mac OS X port for ProENGINEER.

    AGP 8X

wow. but shouldn't we be waiting for the recently released ATI graphics card that now supports AGP 8X. So, while we get the Geforce4 Ti as standard, the PC world gets another bump higher.

Apple, can you now update your motherboard. It's been years with this old technology. DDR anyone?

    So what

Most cards still don't run at 4X (it's flaky). And NVIDIA stuff is faster than ATI anyway.

    If you look around...

...you'll discover that the Radeon 9700 is the fastest consumer graphics card by about 50%. ATI has finally passed nVidia (for the time being, anyway). Also, the Radeon 9000 and 9700 were anounced at Macworld, so I would imagine we'll have just fine support for them (ATI says so anyway). Stop whining, everyone.

    *sigh*

Commenting on the first two comments:

8X AGP at this point will show a significant performance increase over 4X AGP. In fact, to this day, 4X has not shown large advantages compared to 2X AGP. Do a search on google, go read around before you start posting comments like that.

Most cards DO run at 4X, in fact all cards on the market run at 4X. 4X, flaky? Maybe on mac (since I don't know where you come with that claim).

"nVidia stuff is faster than ATI"

They're companies that produce products. They have different product cycles as well, therefore, the role for performance king will switch every few months.

The upcoming Radeon 9700 IS faster than the Geforce 4 Ti4600 by 25-30% as has been shown by Anandtech. ATi will have the fastest card on the market (in terms of the consumer graphics) for a few months. NV30 is bound to head our way either this winter or early spring.

    Altivec

Has anyone else thought of the possibility of running Altivec-type code through video card GPUs or possibly an on-board separate chip, like the one Apple bought recently from some company?

That would free Apple up to use other CPUs and still hype Altivec-type code.

It seems to me that Quartz Extreme is a big step toward that.

    Wow...

so, does this mean that the features of my Geforce 3 will finally be of use? wow... and to think that it only took about 1 3/4+ years for my piece of c*** card to be of full use to me and just in time when something bigger and better shows up. thanks apple!!! Apple should give a rebate for this or at least a chance to trade-up for a better card.

and to think that ATi had the worst support for video cards on the mac side. i miss 3dfx....

    ATI was always better...

for video and 2D work. nVidias had noticeable flaws when decoding video.

If you're a gamer, go with nVidia. If you're a video editor or 2D designer, go with ATI.

    Re: So What

4X, flaky? Huh? Oh, on your system you mean. Unfortunately all you use your card is, for what again? Maybe it's time to change your system. And don't forget to thank Apple for your flaky card's performance. Ha ha.

OK, I give up, why does 8x AGP show significant performance increase over 4x, but 4x was not a large advantage of 2x. Their both twice the performace as their predecessor. Wouldn't logic dictate that the advantages would be about the same %.
