Apple details Mac OS X Up-To-Date program

Apple's Mac OS X Up-To-Date program Web site includes details of the $20 Mac OS X 10.2 upgrade offer announced last week at Macworld Expo New York. Qualifying computers include any Macintosh sold by an authorized Apple reseller on or after July 17, 2002, without Mac OS X 10.2. The $130 (SRP) Mac OS X "Jaguar" (10.2) update will ship on August 24th. The Up-To-Date offer expires October 31, by which point Apple is expected to ship the OS with new Macs.

Missed it by that much!

I guess the customers who bought their Mac two weeks after myself are WAY more important that they can upgrade and I can't. Way to shaft new customers ..er prior to July 17th new customers.

Apple has just about always charged for major OS updates from way back into Mac OS days (with few exceptions). They are doing nothing different here.

They have always charged for x.0 and x.5 OS releases, never a point release which is what Jaguar is. I have to pay for functionality that I already had in Mac OS 9. This is what is so f*cked up!

You people sound like babies. You don't HAVE to pay $130. You only have to pay if you want to upgrade. And if upgrading is worth throwing a fit about, then just maybe it's worth $130...

Apparently you haven't been around long enough to remember the upgrade from 7.5.5 to 7.6. That was not a free upgrade by any means, and the numbering scheme essentially matches what we have here with 10.1.5 -> 10.2. Oh, and why don't you show me how well iSync & Rendezvous works in OS 9.....

Look, there has to be a cut off point somewhere. Free updates can't be extended all the way back to B&W G3 buyers (if it was, i guess the Beige G3 owners would be next in line to whine). Don't take it personally. You probably think the lottery commission hates you too because they haven't let you win PowerBall yet....Get a grip.

Next time don't buy if MNY is only a couple of months away. You should have known a company like Apple will treat you like this. Just wait until they have 20% marketshare, then they will really start s******* you over, they will make Microsoft look like a pussycat in comparison to what apples tactics will be. At least microsoft doesn't make both the hardware and software like apple, so they can only go so far. . .

What about...

What about the people that just bought a new Mac 1 week or 1 month befor July 17th... I think the up-to-date program should extented to people that bought a new Mac 1 month before July17. I think 10.2 should be a pay upgrade, but it would be nice that Apple take care of those that just bought a new computer before the MWNY.

You're so stupid! An Apple II circa 1980's does not warrant a free software. Does it come with OS X installed? We are commenting about people who invested on the buggy and slow OS X which is now actually fixed with Jaguar. We deserve a price break.

Jaguar is the OSX that we should have got in the first place. A snappy finder is NOT a luxury if you work on your Mac for 10 hours a day. I love X and I can;t ever go back to 9 (Stability issues) but whether you like it or not, 9's finder is MUCH faster feeling to use. You can also turn off menu blinking (great way to make it feel faster) which you still can't do in Jag.

Those who want what they coughed up for in the first place are not whining at all, they just won't take any s***. Nothing wrong with that. Although having said that, we're all suckers for Apple here by the look of it.

OSX hasn't been much of a joyride for me. Sure, you get cool eye candy with the dock, and icons that explode when you drag them to the desktop, but the missing features from OS9 have been sorely missed (ie, spring-loaded folders, pop-up windows), and the graphics have been painfully slow. Try resizing a window in IE 5.X without cursing!

So the OSX faithful have been little more than glorified beta testers, and when Apple finally gets a fully-functional version of "Tomorrow's OS", this is the thanks we get for taking the slings & arrows of early adoption. I'd say that gives us ample license to whine....

Right On!

I love OS 9 because it's fast. But as stated, I can't go back to it because of stability issues. Enter our early investment into OS X. Everyone knows Jaguar should have been the final release into X. Everyone who patronized the early releases of X have one way or the other paid for this development.

OS X is slow. Everyone knows it. Just boot back into OS 9 and you know how painful it is to pay up and then get stabbed in the back.

And the point that 1 1/2 years is ample time to start charging again is false. That means Apple can start bringing out unrefined software into the market and let people pay for contuing development. Then charge them again FULL PRICE for the improved versioin.

Even if I'm an Apple supporter, I'm just glad they have 10% of the market. Sometimes I wonder how Steve Jobs really is if he had 90%. And who is the lesser evil between those two companies.

In fact, I have a relative who holds a high position at Apple. And it was mentioned to me how S***** Jobs can be with employees. So if he can piss on his employees like that, then piss on his supporters like that. 10% is all he should have.

My next desktop will be a P4-3Ghz. Not that anyone cares, but just to make sure things are balanced.

And to the people who think it's okay to charge for the final release. Thank God you're a nobody. I wonder how much s*** you give to your loyal customers if ever you had a hold on a market. Come to think of it, no wonder you guys are nothing.

Why is everyone so angry?

I can understand how one could want a discounted upgrade. I bought Mac OS X beta, and I received a discount on my final purchase of X when it came out.

However, some of these comments just seem silly. For one, claims that '10.2 is the OS that 10.0 should have been, so we should get this for free' are not realistic. That claim could be made for any version of any software. Good software is a process, not an absolute type thing. Apple had to make a decision back when they released 10.0. If they didn't bring it out then, they never would have. So it had to go out in the state that it was in.

I agree, I do think it would be nice to receive a discount for 10.2. Have the upgrade price be $69 - $79 for users who have purchased copies of 10.0. But, I don't feel as if Apple 'OWES' that to me. They don't owe me anything except to keep on making better products so that I can 'possibly' give them more money in exchange for those products. That's business, and last time I checked, Apple was a business.

Do I think this is ruthless? No. Do I think this is Microsoft like? Not really. 10.2 looks like it will be a good product. At what point do the creators of this product get a return on investment? True, the programmers have already received their pay, but for them to continue development, they will have to continue to receive compensation for what they're developing.

Also, the OS X naming scheme is different than System 7's, 8's, or 9's. Apple is probably going to retain the X (10) for as long as possible. The bigger the number is not necessarily the better the upgrade in this case. I think the improvements in functionality and feature set in 10.2 are equivalent, if not better than, the ones in any .5 relesae from Apple before.

I don't have much money. Probably less than many of the posters here. But if I was going for the cheapest thing possible, I would have bought a PC now running either Windows or Linux. For myself, I can justify paying more for a better product. Now, I don't have the flexibility to do that whenever a company wants me to buy more. I pay them (a) when I can and (b) if I deem it worth my money. That seems so simple, but it's how it works. If I feel that I'm paying too much, I will probably stop myself from doing so.

This Mac OS X v.10.2 "Jaguar" relesae is no different than any other purchase. To turn it into anything else fooling one's self.

Upgrade coupons

Why can't they give us something, even as little as $30 off (bringing the price down to $99), with those upgrade coupons they included in the 10.0 and 10.1 boxes?

(Or, even better, knock it down to the $69 educational price with a coupon.)

I'm not asking for it to be a free upgrade. I'm not even asking for it to be a $20 up-to-date update. However, I think it's reasonable to say that those of us who've already tossed a chunk of change their way should get some kind of price break.

who in the h*** is the person that wrote ms can only go so far? my god, have you not read anything in the last year about their licensing? their software becomes unusable if you don't register it with them, even AFTER you've bought it! please tell me where this "so far" line is with them? i'm sure they've never seen it.

bundling

i dropped 5000 USD on apple hardware in march. (one computer, one monitor). i don't want to use the i-apps. all i want is the basic functionality of osX in it's most current state. for how long? sheesh, i would hope one year, anyway. i'm all for paying for what you use. but i don't understand why the bundling of the new i-apps with the os should force me to cough up that much extra money so soon. i really don't want to use i sync or whatever. so i am not pleased by this. fwiw.

all the applej�gen are really amazing me. doing the math doesn't matter to them. it seems to make no difference that it costs more to be an early adopter of OS X then it does to be a late comer. jagwire is pretty neat but jeezus. but perhaps I am forgeting that apple is peeeeerfect and we should never question the great ones or we are just whiney babies. so the new motto seems to be "think complacency" right?
this whole deal does a good job in illustrating that even reading these forums can be a waste of time. that being obsessed with your bmw is a waste of time and that paying for software is well... silly. btw, looks like apple dev mailing list members get free copies of jaguar.
