Apple's Xserve Update 1.0 provides updates and enhancements to the serial port, ATA hard disk drivers, server assistant, and server monitoring functions of Xserve. It includes a new version of the Server Monitor and Server Assistant applications, which are "installed by the update in the /Applications/Utilities folder. It is recommended that client computers running these administrative tools update to the new versions by copying the application from an updated Xserve."

    Fixed it

I was dissapointed to see that the server monitor didn't work on our new Xserve when we got it last week. Called Apple support and they told me this fix was coming. Just downloaded and installed it and yes it works. Server monitor now works great. I don't know what the other updates really do but it fixed my one problem. Now I just need to figure out how to get RAID 0+1 working on the 4 internal disks we have and I'll be happy.

    getting an xserve

Should have it ordered by today but was wondering if it would come with Jaguar or with some sort of update plan. Also, I didn't add the memory through the apple store but now I hear that you have to get the memory through apple because of the size of the chips.

    Crucial.com has memory

Crucial.com, Micron's direct sales web site, has Xserve memory. 512MB is listed at $140.

Their parts are guaranteed to work so I assume that includes physical dimensions.

    RE: getting an xserve

Do NOT order you xserve until Apple announces a reasonable upgrade price for 10.2 Server. From what I hear about the pricing right now, I think it's $500 to go from 10.1 Server to 10.2 Server.

    Xserve memory

The DDR memory the Xserve uses is pretty standard. We got a 512 Mbyte DIMM for ours at at Data Memory Systems.

    Server Monitor change

Just installed the update on our single-processor Xserve. Don't know if this is true with the new Server Monitor app, but with the old one, the "low" second fan fan speed now reports as normal (green) instead of warning (amber). Since we always suspected the lower speed of that blower was normal (or thermostatically controlled), I figure this is just a bug fix.

    some info on update

I got around to calling apple and to back up what others have said here, yes third party RAM like crucial is ok. Also if you go to the Xserve page there is a link for an Apple Up to Date PDF that says:

    Mac OS X Server Up-to-date
If you have purchased a Macintosh Server G4 with Mac OS X Server or Xserve on or after July 17, 2002 you may qualify to upgrade for $19.95. Download the US or CA PDF for details.

Guess, I'll get my Xserve now. I just hope they don't announce a 1.4 Ghz version for the same price. I would wait but when you work for the public school system, you take it when you can.

On a side note- I think it's funny when companies say that products will be available in late Aug. or Sept. "just in time for school". Sure, we'll just pop it right in and it works as soon as we get it. No transition period needed.

    upgrade

The upgrade totally trashed my server, time to format the hard drive and start all over again.
