Apple delivered the first ever large-scale MPEG-4 stream to 25,000 people last week, with the Webcast of Steve Jobs' Expo keynote. The event was simulcast in both QuickTime 5 and QuickTime 6 (MPEG-4) to a total of 50,000 viewers; Apple released QuickTime 6 just a day ahead of the keynote speech. “It’s exciting that MPEG-4 is immediately taking off as the new industry standard for delivering high-quality video and audio,” said Larry Horn, MPEG-LA’s vice president of Licensing.

I wish the replay was 5

You need Quicktime 6 to watch the replay. I wish they left a version in QT5 users. (for people who aren't entirely ready for QT6).

    50,000 Viewers....

Oddly enough, 50,000 people also simultaneously uttered the words, "Is that It?!" Investigators on this apparently impossible event are being deployed.

    No better, no worse

Well I have to say "Big Deal" to the whole MPEG-4 stream deal.

The keynote video was definately no better than before, and at least no worse.

Maybe on higher speed connections the quality difference is more apparent. QuickTime certainly does better than that *other* companies product. And QuickTime is a container for various formats and CODECs not *just* an overkill player.

    Me Too!

I was blown away by the MPEG-4 stream quality on my cable@work.com (or whatever the new name is) connection.

I had both streams up at the same time to compare the quality.

    MPEG-4 rocks!

    In Use?

Yes, mpeg-4 may have been around for a while, But this is the First Live broadcast using mpeg 4 ever, and the quality was better than before, plus I was able to play the whole thing in the background while I got work done, there was no hiccups, all the video was there. I could never do that before, so YES it is a big deal. Of course those that think mpeg-4 is just an upgraded mp3 (which is MPEG-1 Level 3 by the way) may not comprehend how big of a deal this is. Apple has been the only one thus far able to secure the licensing with the MPEG-4 developers.

    actually

Mine dropped in mid keynote just before the imac section. i had 3 machines trying to get the stream and it seems that Akamai replaced some links on the ClickHere towatch page in mid keynote.
Could not grab the end of the keynote until it was over.
The stream was less crappy with mp4 but the Sorenson full quality for me was better.
