Tech: InDesign training, ILM and Dell, more

updated 09:55 am EDT, Mon July 22, 2002

Morning Tech news: Adobe today announced that CompUSA has made its InDesign 2.0 software available at nearly 220 CompUSA stores nationwide, CompUSA will also offer free InDesign training throughout its network of training centers; Industrial Light and Magic has switched from using SGI Unix workstations to Intel-based Dell systems running Linux for the majority of its animation and special effects work (ILM switched to Macs for some tasks this year); in a bid to curb any potential media player monopolization by Microsoft, RealNetworks is expected to announce a new version of its software that supports formats from Microsoft's Windows Media Player [free registration req'd].

    ILM and Dell

Ouch, I thought this was the area Apple wanted to strengthen. Maybe if Apple came out with faster computers with cutting edge components, they would stop losing sales to Dell in it's "strong hold" areas.

    ILM and Dell

Apple lost sales to Dell because they are too slow to introduce faster machines. I don't blame ILM for going with Pentium 4 machines. They need the speed for all of those advanced graphics. Apple may be buying up a lot of the software companies that cater to the market ILM is in, but their hardware stinks. Maybe this is a lesson Apple needs to learn: They won't make a sale to hollywood production houses until their hardware is at least equal to the Pentium 4 machines.

Agreed. Apple will almost certainly improve greatly on the already terriffic cutting edge software with the newly purchased companies, but if theyre hardware doesnt roughly double in speed from the current configs, then its all for nothing. Why should ILM spend 3 times the money to use Apples' hardware, when its snailing behind. Get it together Apple. And Steve, the PowerPC roadmap DOESNT look pretty good, it stinks, unless you know something the rest of the world doesnt.

At least Apple could release Powermacs with enough processors to make the Macs faster in _some_ applications.

Dell is no longer M$ s***

I always thought that Dell only sold machines with M$ on it. I did not know they sold lunix machines as well. I guess I have to stop thinking of Mike as Bill's personal b****.

    Re: Dell no longer

Nah Mikes not Bill's personal b****. He has the kneepads and industrial strength bottle of Scope on hand at all times, but only visits bill between the hours or 7 and 9pm mondays, wednesdays, and thursdays.

Bills Personal b**** is now George Dubyah, they stay up late watching s** in the city, giggling about boys and and plotting the downfall of America as we know it

    Indesign training Windows

The Compusa site says that a pentium machine running some flavor of windows is required for Indesign training.

    re: InDesign

Of COURSE you need a PC. No real life publishing and design firms use macs, its a totally PC centric industry!
