Apple earnings due after market close

updated 08:10 am EDT, Tue July 16, 2002

Apple is set to announce its third fiscal quarter earnings today after market close. Apple will webcast its earnings conference call -- following the company's report -- at 5 pm ET. In mid-June, Apple warned that its earnings would fall short, after it experienced soft demand in the consumer and creative markets such as advertising and publishing. Analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial estimate Apple will earn 9 cents a share. Bloomberg quotes Steve Jobs as saying "Not losing a lot of money is, unfortunately, a shining achievement in today's PC market," noting that Apple and Dell are among the few that are profitable, while CBS MarketWatch says that there are "many core issues facing Apple." A Boston Globe article explains the unstable iMac supply and demand ratio that hit Apple hard this quarter.

    pat* *pat*

Apple deserves a pat on the back for not being a totally disfunctional tech company like most of the others, and for having a few pennies in the bank. Good job, Apple. :)

    RE: kick in the butt

Yep. Apple better move its a** and get some compelling products out there or the few investors remaining onboard will jump ship.

If all they announce at Macworld is a 17-inch iMac the share price will fall off a cliff. They also need new PowerMacs, faster PowerBooks (i.e. high margin products) and compelling new iApps to keep their head above water.

    I'd rather...

Apple maintained itself as a solid company with good products rather than a slave to the stock market.

Share prices are arbitrarily determined by selfish idiots who don't care about the companies they invest in and only want to make a quick buck. If companies have to put thousands of people on the street to raise their share price, the investors don't care - all they care about is what colour Mercedes to buy. The fact that people's livelihoods paid for their Mercedes is of no consequence.

Now that my rant is over, Apple does deserve a pat on the back. They are a solid business and will remain so in the future.

    yawn! i'm not selling

i'll hold my stock (not that i have much anyway)..... remember Apple has had a large cash stockpile for a while now. at one point (fall 2001?) they had more cash in the bank than IBM. i do not know how that holds now that Apple has been buying up companies. as said above, they are doing better than most tech companies, and have cash laying around.... i see these buyouts as long term planning. nice to see them doing that instead of some crazy panic move to make the books look nicer.

    Drives me crazy!!!

It drives me crazy when people say "Apple better do something..." They are doing something... Haven't you seen ANY of the billions of screenshots of 10.2!!! or any of their iApps (iTunes is amazing, iMovie is cool, iPhoto is great... perhaps if they were like Microsoft and released c*** that needed to be fixed every other month, people would hear more about it....)

    Burn out the customer!

Apple should release an os evey couple of years, like M$.
And they should release 100 mhz upgrades every 30 days like intel does.
And they also should release new video cards every three months like ati and n'vidia.
But now the customer is not upgrading as often. PC customers now want there pc to last as long as a Mac does. And the old pc users are ripe for the taking. Think about your last upgrade?
