Adobe changes policy for Photoshop 7 SDK

updated 07:25 pm EDT, Fri July 12, 2002

Adobe has recently made a decision to not make the Photoshop 7 SDK available publicly from its website; but however, is offering the SDK to registered members of the Adobe Solutions Network (starting at $200/year): "The Photoshop SDK contains Adobe-owned intellectual property and for that reason, Adobe needs to capture and verify contact information for every party that desires to use this developer kit for business or personal use. Initially, this is the only way Adobe can be certain of the identity of people downloading the SDK." Previously, the company had made the SDK available for download via its Website--without requiring developers to pay a registration fee.

    What a rip-off

And I like it that they have to spin it into this baloney explanation. The bottom line is they're desperate for revenue and they'll take it anywhere they can. Typical Chizen. You can thank him for canning a bunch of great products like PressReady, too. Why oh why did Warnock have to retire?

    good and bad

I have heard that the new SDK provides greater access to many more APIs (and hence, functionality) than previous SDKs, which is pretty much what they said. That should enable much more sophisiticated plug-ins than ever before for Photoshop. That's a good thing.

The downside is that the cost of the SDK may discourage the development of plug-ins by some developers.

I guess we'll see what happens!
