c|net: 17" iMac, .Mac at MWNY; no PowerMacs

", 0, 0);

Apple is expected to announce a 17" flat-panel iMac model next week at Macworld Exo, according to c|net. The article also speculates that Steve Jobs will announce "an August release date for Jaguar...But other sources said Jaguar development is so far ahead of schedule that, barring any last-minute glitches, Jobs may deliver surprise news on how soon the new OS will be ready." Other announcements include a for-fee services .Mac implementation to be included with Jaguar, and a new iTunes revision with MPEG-4 audio codec support. However, the article notes that new Power Macs are not expected until mid-August.

    First post :)

I think they got their info straight from the front page of thinksecret.com. They basically reprinted the same rumors word for word!

    No new Power Macs?

    Noooooooooooooooooo!

I've been waiting for Apple to announce my next computer since January, and now I have to wait longer to see what it's gonna be?

Looks like another less-than-stellar keynote this year. Maybe we'll get lucky and Jaguar CDs will be taped under the seats.

    Waiting

Didn't Apple say something last year about how they want to get out of this product releases being tied to MacWorld thing that they're in? Well, good for them. It can't be a good thing watching sales slow down to nothing two months before every expo just because people suspect that something revolutionary will be announced.

Personally, I'm much more interested in the software side of things and I think that's what most people should be concerned with. Sure the hardware is going to make Apple the real money but let them worry about that. For us consumers, Jaguar is what we'll really benefit from. Apple doesn't need to give us faster hardware, by giving us Jaguar it will have given us faster computers.

    Rumor? Speculation?

Hmm sounds like rumor and speculation to me even though they have their "source". Yet I bet Apple won't try to pull C|Net's media pass like they did all the other "rumor" websites. Damn politics.

    New PowerMacs...

...have been previously introduced at Seybold in August. But we'll here all the whining again at MacWorld - no new PowerMacs -wahhh!! And them some idiot will post an article on the next Pentium and cry "Apple will never catch up! Wah wah wah!" meanwhile, most of us will be using the Macs we own to do actual productive work.

    It's a neverending cycle... :-(

    .Mac?

I can't believe this is the real name.....unless Apple is getting control of a TLD named .Mac this name makes no sense and seems like it will cause needless confusion (people trying to go to www.apple.mac, or people confusing it with .NET, or who knows what else).

Has anyone confirmed this name independent of the Think Secret report which mentioned .Mac?

It just seems so mindboggling stupid that I can't imagine they would use it as a name.

    Towers Aug/Sept *maybe*

It really pays to be clear on "hot button" topics like the release of new hardware...

The article says "...as early as..." mid-August; that's *no* guarantee we'll see *anything* at that time. Could be Seybold in September (not August as previously posted...) or could be at a "special event" anytime between now and MWSF.

So let's all say it together:
"Apple hasn't promised ANYTHING to ANYBODY, so I will NOT whine, pull my hair out, or run around in circles predicting Apple's doom when it doesn't come out on a schedule set by some web site."

And yeah, what about c|net's media pass *now*?

    Pulled Press Passes?

So let's see...I guess that they're going to have to pull C|net's pass, and after the goof from 6 months ago, they *should* be pulling Time Magazine's press passes---So I guess the rule is that "We don't like you telling people things before we get to tell them, unless you're too big for us to threaten."

Steve wants to be able to pull off the sheet and say Ta-da! before anyone else does...does he have THAT much of an inferiority complex?

    Re: New PowerMacs...

well i've resigned myself to the fact that Apple won't catch up until SJ is gone...and that could be a very long time. it still won't stop me from sticking with the mac but our SJ seems to not want to accept the fact that if they want to woo the other 95% then their hardware better be on par or better spec by spec.

that makes no sense. The faster Macs get updated, the more likely people will buy new machines. Technological hurdles (which include costs) is what keeping Apple back, not Steve.
