    No Toolbars?!?!

FileMaker will never get my money as long as they can't manage to make decent software. Aparently, this new version STILL does not support toolbars in Mac OS X. I wrote to them and complained and I suggest others do the same.

    Toolbars?

I can't stand the toolbars - that's a good thing, IMHO. I won't be complaining about that. Of course, if FM had customizable toolbars that you could attach your own scripts to, then I'd like them a bit more.
What I'd really like to see is a multithreaded Web Companion, event triggers, native UI widgets, and a solution-wide security model (I hate updating passwords for every file in a db solution). I couldn't care less about XML right now.

I don't think I'll upgrade from 5.5. The only improvement I see is the customizable dialogue boxes - it's not worth $150 for that.

This has got to be a Joke

Filemaker calls this an upgrade. They added a couple of features that will be helpful to very few while ignoring major bug fixes and features that people have been asking for years.

    A few major documented problems:
    • Problems printing hi-res eps and tiff files in OS-X
    • Multi-user files sometimes are not found in OS-X
    • No graphical guages as found in other databases
    • Extremely slow when using 50+ simple calculation fields

No upgrade would have been better than showing this. Why haven't they at least fixed hi-res printing (this almost effects everyone who puts a logo on their forms). Charging 5.5 users for this c*** is rediculous. I wouldn't waste my time downloading this update if it were free. I don't see them generating any revenue from upgrades and this so called upgrade has opened my eyes. If this is the sort of progress that filemaker is going to make, I better start thinking of moving to new software. There really hasn't been much change since v3.0

    Why??

"OS X-specific improvements include support for OS X services, long file names, import/export of ODBC-based data and Execute SQL script."

I bought FMpro 5.5 so that I could use it on OS X.. the box -and- manual mentioned ODBC-connectivity and SQL-script, however.. they were not supported on OS X.

Now, FileMaker wants to make me pay for the features that were -missing- in FMpro 5.5 ????

    FileMaker Still A Good Ap

FileMaker is still a decent app, excellent esp. for those who own a small business, and/or those who need to develop something quickly. Sure, this ought to be a free update, but I still think they have a good product with much potential. I for one will not give up so easily on FileMaker, Inc!

The comments about slowness - it depends on what you are doing, what platform you are using, and what you consider slow. I have developed very complicated databases with a few hundred calculations in several files, and there is no slowness at all.

As for better ODBC and web features not everyone is interested in these. I have clients who couldn't care less.
