boxIT delivers system updates, apps to Macs

systeMacs today announced the release of boxIT, a new software product that allows Macs to have system software and applications instantly installed from a remote computer and also offers backup/restore functions. The application can deliver a a disk image of a customized Mac with a properly configured operating system and applications to an unlimited number of Macs. (Pricing not available.)

I was very excited to see this, until I went to their site and actually looked at the specifics. Instead of an ordinary software product, this is more of a service (an a pricey one at that)-- the company has to make your disk images for you, at your expense.
Utterly ridiculous. Until someone makes the equivalent of Ghost for the Mac, I guess we'll just have to keep carrying FireWire HDs around, booting from an OS CD, and using stuff like Carbon Copy Cloner and Apple's Disk Copy to duplicate Mac workstations. It's not as nice as being able to multicast, but it's a low cost solution that works well.
