The Omni Group has delivered version 4.1 of its popular 'OmniWeb' Web browsing package for Mac OS X. OmniWeb 4.1 includes greatly-improved support for JavaScript and Cascading Style Sheets, and the ability to 'masquerade' as a different Web browser for sites that restrict users on the basis of installed Web browser. Omni notes that a much-delayed release yielded the best possible product: "We've put a lot of thought into improving the way people interact with their Web browsers, and I think it shows," said Ken Case, OmniWeb Lead Engineer. The licensed version of OmniWeb retails for $30.

The major upgrade also includes the following enhancements:

Compatibility

  • Support for Netscape-style browser plugins including Macromedia's
    Flash 6 browser plugin.
  • Many browser plugins -- Flash included -- perform better in OmniWeb than other browsers (due to dedicated processing time)

    Ease of use

  • Improved preferences interface
  • Software Update built-in, which notifies you when new versions of
    OmniWeb are available
  • 'Send Feedback' Item in Help menu allows user to easily send feedback email
  • Integration with the Dock to display the number of updated bookmarks
    overlayed on the dock icon
  • Improved downloads window

    System Improvements

  • Speech Recognition allows you to surf the Web and perform many
operations in OmniWeb using voice commands
  • OmniWeb honors your System preferences for proxy servers
  • 17 localized languages; new to 4.1 is support for
Greek, Icelandic, Korean, Portugese & Brazilian Portugese, and Russian
  • Support for AppleScript -- allowing users to script
the application as well as providing support for third-party bookmark
and history managers such as URL Manager Pro

      What?

Do you see where I can download it? On OmniGroup website, no mention of 4.1 final.

      Come on

Stop complaining about the logo. If you don't like it, make your own.

      We'll see ...

... if they corrected the slew of rendering bugs I sent 'em.

I'll be particularly interested if they can somehow overcome a particular javascript error that ONLY IE and iCab seem to be able to display correctly.

Not giving up Mozilla, though. It's the best, sorry fellahs.

      Is it me...

... or does OmniWeb feel snappier?

OmniGroup said they had to change the icon at the request of Apple. Perhaps it looked too much like an icon Apple was going to use?
Either way, just see if you can use the far superior icon from the sneakypeeks.

      Icon change odd...

It's odd that Apple would request they change icons. The only icon i'm familiar with that's similiar (very similar at that) is the one used by Chimera. There were some rumors a while back stating that Apple had some direct interest in Chimera development (Apple even used it when showing off the xServe), but they apparently were just that, rumor, or so all parties claimed at the time. Perhaps there is some reality to the claims though... if so, I'd suspect we'd hear about it in New York. We'll see...
