Earthlink to give free Personal Firewall

updated 09:00 am EST, Tue December 19, 2000

Earthlink and Symantec have jointly announced that Earthlink will provide its Mac DSL users with a free copy of Symantec's Norton Personal Firewall. Current users will receive an electronically redeemable coupon for the software, while new users will receive the same after their DSL is set up and running.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha...

Symantec! Yeah, I wonder how long they'll support this product before they kill it off. Yep, I trust Symantec... to shoot its customers in the head as thanks for buying its software.

I will never load anything from Symantec again. Sounds like Earthlink has come up with Yet Another Useless Frill, to add on to the list from Mindspring.

    A Little Late

You're a little late with this news, MacNN.

This was announced back in July...

    Already Gave it to us...

They already gave us Open Door's firewall software a few months ago, as if we really need this stuff in the first place. Isn't Symantec's based on Open Door's anyway?

    "Open Door"???

Doesn't sound very reassuring. Actually, Symantec's so-called firewall isn't supposed to be that good.

    What is it good for?

Isn't this only handy if you run AppleShare?

I mean if you have a DSL connection and are sharing it with other computers aren't you using IPNetRouter or similar software the provides filtering capabilities, but again, you have to be running some kind of server to be vulnerable...unless it provides some kind of protection against MSIE and NN JavaScript security bugs &/or Java bugs.

But I still tend to think this software is a waste of RAM and CPU cycles for most Mac users
