Velocity-X: 200 Gigaflop Mac cluster

updated 12:10 pm EDT, Fri June 21, 2002

The Danish Technical University (DTU) has developed Scandinavia's largest dedicated Mac cluster, consisting of 32 dedicated Power Mac G4 Dual-800 MHz workstations (equivalent to 200 Gigaflops). The cluster, which is called Velocity-X, will be turned on for use on Monday, June 24th with the presence of Apple Denmark. The dedicated Mac cluster will primarily be used to understand proteins' influence on cancer as well as on larger film and animation projects. Velocity-X can be rented for use through the Internet for approximately 50,000 Danish kroner per week ($1 = 8.5 DKK).

    am I right? does that equate to about $5,900 / week to rent that thing? sounds pretty affordable for all that power.

    confusing article #'s

    It should say 50,000 DKK ($1 = 8.5 DKK) - north american format

    OR

    50.000 DKK ($1 = 8,5 DKK) - european format

    Mixing numerical formats only confuses people.

    new Apple Mhz Myth

    "uhhh isn't 6 million instructions per second == 6MHz?"

    Yeah, Apple is going 'old school' numbers to confuse the masses some more with their Photoshop tests on a 6Mhz machine beating a 2.4Ghz P4.

    6 is bigger than 2.4 right!

    oh yeah.

    $5.9 U.S.

    seems VERY low to rent for a whole week of use.

    You can't even rent a 3D renderfarm for $5/hr let alone a week.

    Oooh! And that would be better in what way? Here's an idea for you: learn about Mac OS X. Learn about Pooch. Come back and talk to once you've done so.
