Afternoon tech news: AlltheWeb says it indexes more Web content than Google, after the expansion of its database from 800 million Web pages, to 2.1 billion, besting Google by about 30 million pages; Walt Disney Company is adopting the GNU Linux operating system as the platform of choice for digital animation work, as the company plans on migrating its animation division plans to Linux-driven Hewlett-Packard workstations and servers in future operations; Proxim has acquired ORiNOCO -- maker of the 802.11b AirPort card upon which Apple's OEM card is based -- and its technologies.

Google still better
Exactly *which* 2.1 billion pages is AllTheWeb indexing? I searched for two sites that I made for local organizations, and ATW didn't find either of them, so I submitted them. Google, on the other hand, uses a different crawling scheme based on links -- relevancy is judged by how many sites link to another site, not just META tags. Google also doesn't allow people to pay to have their sites returned as the first results. So when I search for my local organization on Google, it's the first result every time, and I never even had to submit it.
