Salon.com: Is Apple Falling?

updated 10:35 am EST, Tue December 19, 2000

New articles at Salon.com talk about Apple as a poster child of a fading industry, Athlon-based Macs as the solution to the Apple's problems, and Apple's Blind Arrogance through repeated insults to its own consumers.

    20 mb hard drive?

they can do better than that I think:
"...Built in March, the unit came with a 400 MHz processor, a 20 MB hard drive, a Zip drive and 256 MB of RAM...."

    Apple's Arrogance

I don't think there any new news regarding Apple's bullheadedness. This is one of Apple's trademarks as a company. As long as Jobs is in command of the helm, Apple will still have a tinge of arrogance. It's what makes Apple, Apple.

    Apple's Arrogance

And by reading an article from 1984 the journalist also said that Apple was arrogant in deciding what we will use.

He didn't like that Apple forced users to use a mouse and click on icons ;)

Perhaps Apple make some arrogant choices but it seems that they are choices that we won't let go later on.

Yet another set of ill researched set of articles, did they hire that cretiin from Business Week to write these?!

1Ghz Athlon faster than dual processor 500Mhz G4's? Yeah, sure. Watch out for those flying pigs on your way out.

    Cheers

    re: Blind Arrogance

Since when has clearing older inventory at lower prices just befor the new models come out a bad thing, a new thing? It's SOP, I know quite a few people who look forward to buying under such conditions. I guess the reviewer is new to the computer industry.

The guy had a bad day, and seemed to determined to have one, too. I'd order the B&W 15" LCD at Mac Warehouse for cheap, was told I could only get it in graphite color. OK fine. When it arrives I can't connect it to my B&W G3. Fine; their mistake, I'll take the Sony LCD with the cheesy speakers please. As I said, the guy must be new to the computer industry.

    re: x86 based Macs

As if the transition to Os X is not big enough. Introducing new hardware, making all current obsolete or having to support two versions of OS X, wow, that would be the best plan some journalist has ever come up with! Besides, if I wanted to run PC software I would buy a PC, not an Apple machine that is more expensive.

Btw. What is the price of an AMD Athlon 1GHz? Is is less than $440 (the price of two G4's)?

MacNN: there are many stories on Apple's 'misery', many of which seem 5 years old. This does not mean we have to be confronted with them. Instead, give us real news!

    price of 1 GHz Athlon

$174. A h*** of a lot less than 2 G4s. And lets not forget that other than a few apps (Photoshop), Mac OS is still not MP savvy.

    Some common sense

The list of woe's at Salon.com is over the top. And if Apple followed that direction there would not be anything to differentiate the company from the myriad of PC clones out now. But there were a few obvious points raised that should be corrected now - before things get worse. 500Mhz is lunacy!!! If Motorola can't deliver, Apple should dump them and get some company that can. What about recent announcements by IBM regarding high speed processors. No doubt to divert some attention away from a similar announcement by Intel. Still, where are the 750MHz IBM G3s that were due this past fall??? Are we being held back to help Motorola save face so that last generation G3s don't outperform their state of the art G4s? Processor speed may not be everything, but the rest of the design follows (system bus, hard drive, graphics bus, etc). Someone wake up Motorola before Apple ends up the way of the other Motorola based computers!

    Athelon

It isn't a question of if the Athelon is cheaper, or even if it is faster than dual G4s (under X). It is a question of public perception -- that the Athelon is faster, and that there is a LOT more software for Windows.

Using an Athelon (in a proprietary way) cures both of theses.

Mach runs on x86. Darwin runs on Mach; everything else but Classic runs on Darwin.

    P4...

I just love how all these portals (SPECIFICALLY Salon.com) always knock Apple. I guess the fact that stores are pulling computers with Pentium 4 chips off the shelves and returning them to the manufacturer becasue of customer complaints wasn't a big enough story???! They all knock Apple becasue face it - Apple is the LEADER. Look around - you can buy ANYTHING in translucent colored plastic now. And I shouldn't even have to mention all the industrial design ripoffs, MacOS similarities, etc... =D
