PowerLogix today announced the BlueChip Pismo G4 500 processor upgrade for PowerBook G3 "Pismo" (aka "FireWire or G3 2000 PowerBook) laptops. The upgrade features a Motorola PowerPC G4-7410 processor running at 500 MHz and "requires that the the original processor card have its G3 processor removed, and replaced with the G4-7410....Customers who wish to have their laptop upgraded with the BlueChip Pismo send the laptop to PowerLogix. The original processor card is verified and tested prior to the chip swap, and retested prior to shipment back to the customer. Turnaround time is guaranteed to be five business days or less for domestic customers." The $330 BlueChip Pismo will be available for order June 17, is warranted for two years, and includes Fedex overnight shipping both ways. A special introductory discount of $30 will be available through July, 2002.

    Why?

Apart from the fact that this is US only currently (I'm in the UK) I can't see the point in spending $300+ on a 100Mhz upgrade.

A 600Mhz or 700Mhz upgrade would be great, but 100 extra just seems pointless to me, despite getting Altivec too.

As for warranty issues, yes it will void it, as they take a part off your current cpu module to put on the new one - hence the send in thing.

    1Ghz upgrades

Did I mention 1Ghz for $300? No. Not even close.

    But I'd happily pay $500 for a 667Mhz G4 upgrade. Compared to the G3 400 I'm using now it would feel faster. I don't think a G4 500 would really.

We've waited so long, and 100Mhz seems so little when the 7410 is available at 550Mhz and can be overclocked.

    500 vs 500

You people talk about 100 MHz being so little, but what about those of us who own Pismo G3/500s? We'll see an even smaller difference than you!

    Clue-101

The speed difference may numerically be only 100MHz, but it seems the whiners are ignoring the fact that you are also getting a G4 - including better and faster memory management, AltiVec, and the ability to run applications that *need* a G4 - stuff like DVD Studio Pro, and Real-Time Effects under Final Cut Pro can now be performed on the Pismo.

At $299 for the upgrade (at least the one from NewerTech, which I just bought), this is an incredibly good deal for those that prefer the Pismo, and it's many advantages over the underperforming Titanium machines (which suffer from problems like easily scratched, paint that flakes off, non-ergonomic design, only a single battery bay, etc...)

Sounds like cheap quality if I ever heard any. . .
