Mozilla 1.1a has many feature improvements

updated 11:50 am EDT, Wed June 12, 2002

Mozilla.org has released an alpha of the next generation of its Web browser, Mozilla 1.1a. It brings an improved download manager, supports Quartz rendering under OS X 10.1.5, converts HTML mail to plain text, has the ability to quote the original message, has DHTML display enhancements, improves autocomplete sorting, includes redundant backup files, and has better drag & drop support. [Classic, OSX]

    Note this is Alpha

Anyone trying this should note that this is a Alpha release and almost certain to have numerous bugs, so don't download it and then complain here about how buggy it is. Use any Alpha (or Beta, for that matter) at your own risk.

    Duly noted, but ...

... the biggest thing I notice is the MUCH improved startup time (my single biggest complaint) and the much improved DHTML handling. I was not expecting so much improvement in so short a time.

Hats off to the Mozilla team, who are seriously kicking IE's a**. The MacBU at MS is going to have to get busy FAST to prevent a mass migration.

    All i want...

in any of these other web browsers is the scrapbook feature like IE has. Yah, yah, yah, i know i can use a number of other apps to download and save websites, but that's not what i want, i want it built into the web browser like IE has it...

mozilla does allow you to do a save as and save the web page WITH graphics which is a nifty feature for learning, etc., etc.

so much in a short time

This wasn't really such a short time. I think the 1.0 devel branch didn't have these features, and they weren't included until now. So really, these things have had since 1.0 was "feature-locked" to be worked on. Not to downplay the improvements, just clearing up the time thing.

    Quartz-Text Smoothing

I can't say I like the text smoothing. For normal 12pt text it may be ok (although I think pages look just as fine in Mozilla 1.0 or Explorer). But smaller text is a catastrophe. Take the sidebar on macnn.com for example. Dark background and small text. It looks verry blurry in Mozilla 1.1 or Chimera. Unless you have a 200dpi screen, that is. Also the "Turn Off text smoothing" feature in System Preferences doesnt work. Either I need a new pair of eyes or Apple needs to change the smoothing algorythms.

    What do others think?

    Login-Problems

btw. I can't seem to be able to login into macnn.com with Mozilla. Had to switch back to Explorer. What gives?
