Bains Software's Mail Beacon 1.5, now available for OS X, alerts users when new messages arrive and/or when messages are deleted in any number of email accounts. The $10 shareware supports both POP3 and IMAP protocols, offering the ability to read, delete, and filter mail without downloading messages as well as reply/forward/redirect messages.
