c|net: Apple changes retail store strategy

updated 04:50 pm EDT, Thu June 6, 2002

", 0, 0);

c|net notes Apple's expanding retail strategy, which could include having PCs in the retail stores for comparisions. "If the proposal is adopted, PCs from one or more manufacturers would be compared with Macs, the sources said. Apple also plans to run Connectix VirtualPC--emulation software for running Windows on Macs--on store demo units. This too would be part of the "conversion" strategy, showing potential PC customers that they could continue using current Windows software on their new Macs." Apple also plans to open an additional 18 stores this year, bringing the total to 49.

    Virtual PC already going

I visited the Apple Store in Atlanta three weeks ago, and they had a Quicksilver G4 hooked up to a Cinema Display running Windows 98 in a floating window.

    sweetness

they should just hook dumbasses by running virtual peecee in full screen mode and letting people think macs run windows. what happens when windows quits? it defualts to a better more stable operating system that simply lets u restart windows again. duh!

but yeah running virtual peecee in mac windows would be sweet. pop open some peecee only web features and the regular apps like word etc THEN push the mac advantage on top of that.

having actual peecees in stores is pretty weak although it may work on unsuspecting soccer moms. why not run those "photoshop" tests were so fond of as well?

    machines

Will they be comparing them with a 2.4Ghz P4 system, with DDR 333 memory, Geoforce 4 card (non MX series), 7200 rpm hard drive with 8mb cache etc, or a AMD Athlon XP 2200+ system with the same harddrive, video etc.? Will they be showing that to upgrade a cpu, you just unmount the cpu fan, and lift the bar on the ZIF socket to easily upgrade the cpu without having to re-buy a whole new system?

    yeah photoshop

Photoshop bake offs...and the like...they are exciting. It would be cool to publish all the results from the time they started doing it. We could all remember fondly things like "Remember in '98 when Steve opened that one picture up...that was a doosy" and other nostalgia like that.

When some of us are 50 years older and quantum computers are the mainstay we can look back and say...remember those photoshop bake offs...those were the days...and we can pull up photoshop version 32 and see how far we've come. I'll bet even then people will be whining about that floppy drive. They'll say...where's that floppy drive.

    This is futile.

Apple simply needs to hire s*** b****** to pimp their Macs. Oh, and next to that genius bar, have a masseuse bar, too.

    NO VPC5!!!

It sucks and is soooo slooowwwww. I really hope they don't have any major apps running, and that they are all launched. VPC5 sucks, it's c*** and slower then a 1 1/2 legged blind dog.

    Finally

Apple is comparing their products to Windows. That's wonderful. In a close comparison, Windows simply can't win.

They should have been doing this over 10 years ago. DOH!

I still have the video (VHS) from 1996 called "Macintosh or Windows". Goes throught the process of adding memory, hard drives, a printer, conneting to a network and the best of all inserting a floppy , when as we all know the PC sits there not knowing what has just happened etc, Funny as f***. The Mac looks like a piece of design genius and only idiots would buy a PC.

Didn't seem to do the job though.......

    Video?

Is it online somewhere? I'd love to see it. Heck, I'd pay for the shipping of a video copy.
