MS releases Office v.X, MSN Messenger 3.0

Microsoft today announced the availability of Office v. X SR1 and MSN Messenger 3.0 for Mac, which brings performance improvements, updates, new features and fixes featured across the entire suite of business applications, including Word X, Excel X, PowerPoint X and Entourage X. Microsoft also said it will provide a component to enable synchronization between Palm operating system-based handheld devices and Entourage X as a free download starting July 15. [Office v.XSR1, MSNM 3.0]

The update includes better readability of on-screen text in all the Office v. X applications through Quartz text smoothing ("a new feature available for Mac OS X 10.1.5 or higher") as well as the ability to import FileMaker data into Excel via ODBC.

MSN Messenger 3.0 for Mac offers improved communications and contact management as well as an updated interface. It offers the ability to transfer files to people in the user's Buddy List, organize contacts in groups, and resize toolbars and icons and improved emoticon support.

does it req. 10.1.5? or is this just for font smoothing? Seeing as this is the only feature I really want, I guess I'll have to wait regardless. . .

Shame about Entourage

ok, updates are good, but.... Still no Palm support? man, I love having a copy of Entourage X that's totally useless. Still using Entourage 2001, and will be till palm support is added to X

Downloaded!

I just installed the update and the only really improvement I noticed right off the bat was Word scrolls through long documents as fast, if not faster than Word 2001. Which is great for me since I spend 90% of my day in Word working in long docs.

BUT...I want improved text rendering NOW! What's up, Apple?? Can we have 10.1.5 sometimes soon???

im running 10.1.4 on a g4 powerbook 500, 384 ram and SR1 crapped out all my office apps, PP, Word and excel bounce about 10 times then just stop and I get a mailbox error when entourage tries to open, that it quits. GRRRRRRRRR

Update killed my serial #

Ack! This update killed my perfectly valid CD key. Upon launch of any app, I am asked to re-enter my CD key. So I turn over my CD case, read off the CD key, and enter it and to my chagrin, it's invalid. WTF??? Beware!

Not good, not good

Looks like another snafu for M$. Valid Key Invalid?? Strange that I'm taking it directly from the Welcome booklet included with Office X. HELP! Now I can't use any of my apps!!

PERFECT.

Installed easily. Besides vastly improved scrolling, these 4 apps open in the blink of an eye on a TiBook 500.

Problems? Were all previous updates installed on your machines?

CD-key error

Yup, I too had my CD-key turn invalid all of a sudden. Fortunately, I only had to pop the install CD back in, copy that Office folder over the one in my Applications folder, and I was immediately back in business. So at least it was (for me) an easily recoverable problem. Doesn't make it any less annoying or stupid, but I've come to expect as much from MS.

No problems at all

Everything looks much better, but where is MSN Messenger 3.0.0? I didn't have a CD Key problem at all. The only change was when I started Entourage it wanted to know if it could have access to keychain for my passwords for my email accounts. Just a one time thing. very nice Mac BU!

Fixes

If you's are fixing the serial number problem by replacing the apps, then you are reverting back to the old, un-updated version of office. Thats no fix.

If you're the owner of a "valid" key, say, obtained from your local P2P network, you may be having trouble because MS wants to crack down on the CD keys that are being shared by our friendly mac community. I wouldn't be surprised if they issue a special patch to the real owner of the software once they verify their purchasing information in some way only the true owner can. But wait, would MS actually inconvenience their true buyers just so they could crack down on a few unauthorized copies of Office? nah.. this is too far-fetched of an idea. Never mind.

Well of course I'm reverting back to the old, un-updated version of Office...I realized I was doing that when I copied them back from the CD. I guess I never thought anyone would believe that to be a true "fix," simply a workaround until they can not negate my serial number.

Have even one of you thought to call Microsoft and ask them what's up? Or is the first thing you did is come here and complain? MS may even give you a new working serial number, or help you get your old one working.

Buy your software! I got a full version of Office X through my college for 5 dollars. Mabye I'm just lucky but if you can not afford software don't use it. I know we all dislike MS but get real, stealing is stealing.

Please, get to know the issues before you say something this short-sighted. Take a look over at xlr8yourmac.com for all the legitimate users who are having this problem, and when you start to eat your words, consider Office's network blocking code and how that is a _very justifiable_ reason why one would get a pirated SN.

Microsoft doesn't sell Office to schools for $5. The lowest price on licensing 6.0 (even Microsoft's agreements have version numbers, talk about a work in progress!) bring education discounts of office down to only as low as $39/copy, provided one prepays for 25,000-50,000 seats. And that's a PER YEAR license.

So if your school is selling Office X for $5, I hope it's a private school because I for one would be very upset if taxpayer dollars were used to subsidize further entrenchment of the Microsoft monopoly.

Just updated

a standard version and I didn't need to enter a serial number. Then again, I am the original purchaser. Even though I didn't register my software with Microsoft, I did share my CD and key with a dozen or so of my closest friends so I'll see how there updates went.

Although Transmeta has touted web appliances from day one, with its Debian-based reference design, Microsoft's Tablet PC calls for a much more expensive and functional device. It uses a full-blown version of Windows XP with added handwriting recognition at laptop prices. The Evo is due to ship later this year. Dell has yet to announce a Tablet device.

So When is Apple coming out with a tablet?

A great update!

Yup, there's always those that seem to have trouble - some of which STOLE the software...tough luck, thieves.

to the man who assumes he knows so much about post secondary institutes charging for office ... the minimum could not be $39, my public university charges $25, and makes a profit. i know this bc i make the orders and i see what we pay and how many we have paid for, and its not 25,000. don't believe me, search through UW webpage, you will find out you are not only only ignorant, but also wrong (www.wisc.edu)

Boy, you all think you know what the h*** is going on, don't you? First off, just because we're discussing the problem here first before calling MS doesn't mean we've all STOLEN the software. But thanks for playing chump.

Personally, I don't have a spare 1/2 to 3 hours to sit on the phone with tech support today, so I haven't reached that step yet, especially if I could potentially determine by reading these posts that the solution is something I can do myself without having to call tech support (which I LOATHE doing, no matter if it's MS, Apple, whomever).

Secondly, there HAS been precedent for selling $5 copies of Office at major state-run Universities. That's how I got Office 98 back in the day. Quite a deal, and completely legit as far as I could tell (the CD was specially pressed with the name of the University on it and very little MS branding).

So, the moral of this story is don't shoot off your damn mouth when you don't have a freakin' clue what you're talking about. True, some folks having the CD-key issue probably pirated the software, but I think you should at least consider the possibility that the problem is a little more wide-spread than that.

installed smoothly

Combo-drive iBook 600, one of the last files to install was "registration update" or some such. Fired up Word and it loaded fast, showing SR1 as the version in the "about box". Same with Excel. My company bought Office 98 for me, I bought the upgrade to v.X. I did not have to re-enter the CD key.

Oh, give it up and admit to it. Either you're using a pirated copy or you were stupid enough to use a pirated key with the copy you bought. MS has been doing the same thing on the windows versions for the last few releases. They lockout all widely pirated keys when the SR is installed. Sure it's tough brake to all you thieves but you knew the risks.
