Morgan Stanley says that Apple will ship about 235,000 iMac units this quarter compared with Wall Street consensus estimates of roughly 300,000, according to Briefing.com. Update: Salomon Smith Barney is "defending AAPL against a rumor that they will miss the 300k iMac Street forecast ; firm does not know where the 300k forecast comes from, and believes [Apple] is tracking towards 225k-250k units for the quarter (although that is still below firm's estimate of 265k)."

    Explain

It would help if you told us why they expected lower shipments than expected.

    May be the truth

Apple has contracted a second (additional) manufacturer for the LCD iMac because of unresolved intellectual property issues between Quanta and the new supplier. The dispute may very well have resulted in production glitches.
It did not state that demand was the culprit.
Anyway, their 225-250k units figure is nothing to sneeze at.

These shadowy b******* need to depress stocks indeed so that they can get their grubby hands on the sell-off, then say good things about Apple, only to sell it then..

    Heh ...

I can remember back when Apple was lucky to sell a little over a million units COMBINED in a year. Now it looks as though each of their four main product lines will do at least that well (not counting the iPod and the XServe). I predict that Jaguar will help push sales upward in Q1 (which starts in September, IIRC).

    How do they do it?

How do Brokers in NY, understand the production, inventory levels, and manufacturing projections half a world away when Apple won't even tell us what they are working on next? Does Apple give them the quantity of finished products each day so they can sit down with calculator?

My guess is they are just guessing at what makes for a good headline.

    coming this fall!

A report from the heartland of American manufacturing (ie Taiwan) suggests that production of 17 inch and 19 inch versions of the new iMac will begin in Q3 this year.

Local news service Digitimes reports also reports that the industry-wide LCD shortage continues to constrain the number of IMacs that the manufacturer Quanta can ship. Mindful of these shortages, a Q3 production ramp allows Apple time to build inventory in time for a New Year launch. Having inventory lying around isn't particularly fashionable now, but it is a sensible move when key component supplies are constrained.
