Some iMac orders to be filled by new vendor

Apple is reportedly switching contracts for its LCD iMac computers from Quanta Computer to Hon Hai Precision, as a result of Quanta's inability to recieve parts from Hon Hai on time. "Hon Hai's failure to supply Quanta with the crucial components has prevented Quanta from maintaining an even rate of production."

So the company creating the shortage is getting the contract? D'oh! Sounds like Apple did another Homer Simpson again.

In addition to Quanta Computer, Apple Computer is said to have assigned increasing orders to other Taiwan-based computer companies, following the example of its major rivals, including Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM Corp., Dell Computer Corp. and Compaq Computer Corp.

It sounds pretty darn confusing to me, unless this allows them to go to other vendors instead of single sourcing...

    perhaps . . .

perhaps hon hai was just having problems sending them to quanta and this is the elimination of the middle man, sort of? perhaps apple pulled a h. simpson again, as previously stated

    uh

I think we have no idea what is really going on. These silly articles offer no real insight into the actual procceses these companies go through.

    RE: perhaps

That's exactly what I think Apple is doing; eliminating the "middle man" to get faster production. I mean, Hon Hai will be getting paid more from Apple, and therefore will be more motivated to make the parts faster, no?

    Clarification?

"as a result of Quanta's failure to acquire some patented key components from Hon Hai"

where does it say "supply shortage" ? Quanta just can't get what Hon Hai has.

    Quanta

For all we know, Quanta may be having financial problems and Hon Hai will not ship the parts to Quanta because Quanta is behind on paying Hon Hai's invoices.

There are many possible explanations why do people automatically assume that Apple is doing something stupid?
