Apple starts new promos in US and Europe

Apple's new SuperFly promo offers a free SmartDisk FireFly 5GB FireWire Hard Drive (T4449LL/A) with each custom-configured PowerMac G4 or PowerBook G4 purchased at the Apple Store. Users may upgrade the memory, hard drive, optical drive, graphics card, removable storage, SCSI support or AirPort card. Apple is also offering up to �240 back on the purchase of Power Mac (depending on model) with the trade-in of an old Power Mac in one of several European countries, including UK, Austria, Swizterland, France, and Germany.

they say "Ruil nu je oude Power Mac in en ontvang tot � 400 korting bij aanschaf van een snellere Power Mac G4-toren." thats almost the same as in english

No, it just means that _new_ PowerMacs are coming (as if that were a shock to _anyone_). The only things that that are nearly given are the things that we recently saw in Xserve - DDR-SDRAM and larger HDs. Prolly better video-cards and a speed bump, but saying that discounts == G5 is just inviting disappointment.

It may not be a G5 but...

It is going to be much better than the current line, especially in the System bus (DDR 266, hopefully faster) and a large speed bump.

G5's...

Why do people think the G5 will be announced this July??? Apple JUST announced a new server platform that sports new G4-based technology. Why would they base it on the G4 if there was something much more powerful right around the corner????? THIS MAKES NO SENSE!!!

THERE WILL BE NO G5 ATLEAST FOR ANOTHER 7 MONTHS

Not that I really think that G5s are coming soon, either,... two things need to be noted. 1) Just because Apple introduced a new server platform based on G4s doesn't mean they can't introduce G5s in their Pro-models. Perhaps this new "G5" produces way too much heat to be in a 1U rack-mount server (kinda like the real .. not mobile .. P4 on the PC side). and 2) If I recall correctly, Apple controls the G-naming. If they wanted to release a 1.4 GHz 745X as a G5, they could. It would be worth noting, though, that as soon as that happened, the news sites would be all whining about the fact that it's a G4 renamed G5... so they probably won't do that.

I just bought a Ti800 and upgraded it at the apple store. why can't I get one of those Firefly drives?!?

Apple rewards the late adopters, not the ones who buy and create the buzz.

Can't hurt to call up and ask, you might get lucky. While the G4 towers are obviously due for an update, this promo also leads me to believe that there will be an iPod update as well. The Firefly is the drive used in the iPod, and Apple is also selling Firefly drives separately for $99. Looks like they need to get rid of lots of them...

I know it's not coming, but how cool would that be if we really did get an ipod/pda/cell phone device!!??

Apple could really do some interesting things. The biggest problem with a device like this would probably be cost. Knowing Apple, it would look beautiful, work better than anything else out there and introduce some sort of revolutionary featureset. Also knowing Apple it would cost way too much to be adopted by the general public.

So... that's probably why Steve said that they aren't doing any sort of PDA device, atleast for the next two years, about a year ago. Maybe once costs come down??

Anyone think a tablet-based portable is in Apple's future??
