Graphics chip manufacturer 3dfx Interactive announced today that it will substantially reduce all of its workforce as part of an initiative to significantly reduce expenses and is recommending to its shareholders that they approve an agreement to sell certain assets and products of the company for $112 million to Nvidia, the company's long-time competitor and market leader in PC graphics and that the company be dissolved following the sale. A letter from 3dfx's CTO Scott Sellers, a revolutionary in 3D graphics engineering, addresses the company's customers for future support of the company's products.

    I love my Radeon

It's sad to see a pioneer fall to its death, but boy am I glad that I chose the Radeon over the Voodoo5! Bring on the GeForce2 MX!

    3dfx

Gee, does someone has a link to info on what tech 3dfx has, that it so far havent used in any current product? There must be something that really do interest Nvidia here.

    GigaPixel

I imagine that technologies developed by GigaPixel (one of the top candidates to develop the graphics for X-Box), which 3dfx acquired earlier this year for $186 million, are of interest to Nvidia in addition to their unique FSAA implementation.

3dfx was gearing up to move to GigaPixel's revolutionary rendering technologies in the latter half of 2001 and 2002.

    Why Nvidia bought 3dfx

The reasoning behind the buy out is a patent infrigement case that 3dfx was winning against Nvidia. In the past it has been noted that a buyout is the typical response by Nvidia to potential loss of a patent case.

    mac users loose once more

Just bought the fw-900 sony wide screen. Only mac graphic card on the market able to display 1920x1200 @85hz + 1600x1024 @85hz is the voodoo 5500 !

Just bought it. Paid 400 usd (in switzerland, everything is more exepensive) for it ! and now it seems like clear that I will never see updated drivers, and support for OsX is just a dream.

I really feel like a 2nd class citizen, being a mac user, once more !!! Pc users have several graphic cards that can do 1920x1200 @85hz and they don't need to pay 400usd for it.

    Bogus link?

Am I the only one who can't read the letter from 3dfx's CTO, linked above? I get a blank screen on either Netscape or IE, on two different platforms.

As the new owner of a DOA Voodoo4, I'm most certainly interested in hearing about support.
