Brian Pink notes that his new 12.1", 600MHz iBook 600 (with a Combo drive) shipped with a faster 8x8x8x24x DVD-ROM/CD-RW mechanism, originally shipping with the 14.1" iBook only: "I fired up Toast to burn some CD's and was pleasantly surprised to find that the burner was not a 4x as reported on apple.com, but an 8x!"

    been a while

iBook 12.1" have been shipping with the 8X Sony drive almost since they came out.....

One of the pieces of evidence for this is was in the developer's notes that indicated it was an 8X. Apple probabally keeps the 4X spec on their page to cover them in case of older stock

    8X

How pathetic! In this day and age, 8X is so behind the speed curve, 24X should be the minimum speed, you can go to most any store and pick up 32X and 40X10X48 without batting an eye. 8X... thats easily the year before last years drive. But then, Apple is so far behind the technology curve when it comes to bus speeds, memory speeds, cpu speeds.

    Um.. not 24x combo drives

Regular CD-RW drives may be 24x or 32x but not laptop sized CD-RW/DVD-ROM drives.

    Heat Disipation

Let's not forget the heat issue. For a long time, internal drives were the stupidest thing you could buy as the heat from these things was terrible. Things have gotten better for full size drives, but laptops have much worse cooling than desktops due to their cramped innards, and can't deal with the amount of heat currently put off by most 32x and 40x.

    Re:8x guy

I always wonder when I see posts like this; (how pathetic! In this day and age, 8X is so behind the speed curve, 24X should be the minimum speed, you can go to most any store and pick up 32X and blah blah blah) it's pretty obvious you don't know what you're talking about.

    news

well, i, for one, was unaware of the change. so i thought i would pass the info on for others like me who mistakenly read the specs on apple.com and assumed they were up-to-date. thanks.

...this combo drive does 16x/10x/24x and 8x DVD and should be at the hands of OEMs for a couple of months now.
