AppleCare is expected to introduce lower pricing on select out-of-warranty parts: "In an ongoing effort to meet the unique needs of Apple Service Providers, AppleCare will soon introduce new competitive pricing on select out-of-warranty parts. hmm

Are they expecting things to break or wear out much faster than what used to? Perhaps they have refined the methods of manufacturing so the product will hold up just long enough for the warranty to expire, then the incidence of the product breaking down goes way up so that they can sell more parts which has a much higher mark up than the whole. . .

    Mac parts

The excessively high spare parts for Macs are a major disincentive to purchase (for those of us who have been burnt).

My crappy PC can have almost any calamity fixed for under $100 - hard drive, RAM, etc, AND I can do it myself because I can get the parts easily.

My Mac makes me bleed if it breaks down. I venture back into a new Mac every so often, but when it needs work, it's usually more economic to scrap it because the parts and repair cost exceeds its value. (Except my SE/30 which keeps on going)
