"Chris" describes a potential solution for the so-called death of many iPod digital music players. Several iPod owners have experienced a complete and permanent loss of FireWire connectivity from the device to a Macintosh. When presented with these unexplained occurrences, Apple's technical support department has been largely unable to remedy the problems and offered replacement units for $256 apeice.

Chris, publisher of a "dead iPod" updates page, has posted an image of damaged solder joints on the FireWire connector of his iPod. It is believed the damage may have been the result of "wear and tear" on a fragile component.
