Apple's eight-page Form 10-K details Apple's fiscal operations for 1998, 1999 and 2000. The report notes that Apple's net income for 2000 was 30 percent higher than 1999 primarily due to higher iMac sales (approximately 2.2 million units in 2000 or 40 percent more than 1999). Approximately 545,000 iBooks were sold in 2000, and Apple experienced modest gains on the sales of its professional line (PowerMacs and PowerBooks). R&D expenditures increased 21 percent or $66 million to $380 million in 2000. Advertising expenses were also up to $281 million from $208 million in 1999.

    380 million into R&D?

Whoa. That's a healthy improvement over 1999! Let's see the fruits of that labor next year.

    CDRW

What would the numbers have been if they had implemented CDRW in 2000? That must have hurt iMac and iBook sales because they are consumer kit, and most of the wintel desktops come with CDRW now.

    Keep in mind...

that their fiscal year ends on 9/30. Thus, FY 2000 has been over for them for a while. The anticipations of quarterly losses was for the first quarter 2001, which started on 10/1/00 anbd ends the beginning of January. I HATE it when companies have fiscal years that are SO out of joint with the calendar. I used to work for a company that had a fiscal year that ended June 30.

    CDRW

i see a lot of people talking about how Apple should have included CD-RW in their machines this year. remember, hindsight is 20/20.

but really, if the whole "Napster" thing hasn't been so huge this year it would have been quite different. we knew it was cool, but who knew that EVERYBODY would know Napster by the end of the year? if Napster hadn't been so popular, i argue that CD-RWs wouldn't have been nearly as popular either, and Apple's choice of DVD instead would have been solid.

but again, hindsight is 20/20. i still think they did the right thing at the time to support DVD so heavily.

    Form 10-k

Id be interested in knowing just why CBS Market watch would post Apple's 10-k?? Is it customary for them to report on other computer companies 10-k's normally? Have they ever posted one on M$, Compaq, Dell, etc?

    Apple, MS and Tech Stocks

I just saw a headline where analysts were "surprised" at MS and its current reports, resulting in loss of per share value...

    What miraculous, all-knowing tunnel-visionaries these anal-ysts are!

Monopolistic MS produces TONS of stuff, most of it being bloated, "trying-to-do-too-much for what it is" software, much of which is of relatively poor stability and dubious quality. But, like bacteria, it is indeed everywhere...

Quantity (MS) does not NOT equal quality, and keeping that in mind, MS is in VERY much in the same boat as all all the other tech stocks in the currents trends. Were MS not the monster that is has managed to evolve into,it would have died a LONG time ago.

Long live Apple and similar companies and their "vision".

Angels and ministers of mercy, defend us!

    WS Investors are coward

I remember 4 years ago talking to some Investors (Smith Barneys) who were saying that Apple was dead and would disappear in 6 months.
Now, all Wall Street Investors who work on PCs, and probably hate Apple, spend their time digging for some info that can make the stock tumble more.
Even when Apple released the Imac and was selling tons of it, all investors were criticizing saying the "Imac fever" would not last. Then quarters after quarters Apple delivered.
So, I am asking those Investors.
Dell, Compaq stock has been dragging its feets for more than a year. Dell, Compaq, Gateway have also forecasted lower earnings.
How come they have not been downgraded. Since all investors know that we are entering a new computer cycle, why aren't they looking at those companies 10K, or other bad information.
Dell, Compaq, Gateway does not have Giga Ethernet, Firewire built-in, Imovie pre-installed... have they missed the boat?
Beside, Ipaq (what a very inventive name, I'm sure it took Compaq a long time to figure out this name) their home appliance is really uggly and I don't think they're selling. I'm sure Apple sold more Cubes than Compaq sold Ipaq.

I believe Steve got one slap on his face. I don't think he's going to wait for the second. Believe me, I'm sure people are busy @ Apple.
If Home Appliance are not part of Apple Future, then yes they would be dead. I believe Apple engineer can release "what customer are waiting for Internet Home Appliance". They are so good at hardware and design. I can not wait to see that and I'm sure they will ignate the Home Appliances revolution like they ignate the micro-computer.
