At PalmSource 2000, Palm CEO Carl Yankowski outlined his six-part vision for handheld computing and made several announcements to the more than 3,000 attendees:

  • A range of new wireless modems and integrated wireless handhelds are expected in 2001, which will give users access most of the world's major wireless networks.
  • Samsung, a new licensee of the Palm OS platform, is developing a new Palm OS-based smartphone for release in the first half of 2001 with functions for a datebook, addresses, to-do lists and memos.
  • Net PIM, including the creation of MyPalm portal. The public beta is due by the end of the year.
  • Communication Phase 1, which will extend existing e-mail solutions to include message notification, instant messaging and seamless access to Exchange e-mail.
  • Communication Phase 2, in which Palm is adding voice, first via telephony, then incorporating voice as data into the Palm OS.

    What about mail?

When can I integrate my Palm V mail program with my iMac email program (Entourage). So much for seamless communications.

    wireless?

Um, my definition of "wireless communication" doesn't mean "buy a $40 modem that connects through a CABLE to a cell phone". Even if you're using the infrared port, you're still paying obscene cell phone usage charges. I'd rather see a wireless low-bandwidth Ricochet-like modem for my Palm IIIc that cost me no more than $15-20/month for limited usage.

Oh, and hey, Palm? Could you, oh, I don't know, maybe make some kind of satement about when the h*** you expect Mac OS X compatibility, or if you're even working on it? Thanks, appreciate it.

Palm Computing inc are delighted to announce today that a date has been set for developmnet of an OSX desktop software. This will begin immediately after we have finished fine tuning our software in response to the next five versions of Microsofts ever popular "Windows" software.

    Why don't Apple licence

Why don't Apple become a licensee of the OS and produce a neat PDA to fit in with the rest of the line up. Then they could produce all the little apps that would tie in the Palm OS with the Mac. Look at how Handspring shook up palm and made them lower prices and be more innovative.

But then the Palm wasn't Steve's idea, so he probably dosn't like it. shame I think an "iPalm" could introduce people to the Mac as well as bringing significant sales for Apple in the PDA market

    s**** licensing...

Palm has a 1.3 billion dollar market value. Apple ought to just buy them outright.

    Buy Palm!

Yeah, swallow 'em up. That company was pretty much started by Appleheads anyway wasn't it?

Of course, it's pretty Microsoftish behavior, "if you can't beat 'em, buy 'em"

    License to steal?

Palm is not alone in this, but why do these hardware suppliers like Palm and wireless phone companies gouge me with their exhorbitant fees to check my e-mail and surf the internet when I already have an ISP???

Charge me once for making the call, but don't charge me twice by forcing me to do this through yet another ISP. Too much greed here. I refuse to pay twice for the same thing just because it is across the airwaves instead of a line!

    what about Airport

I don't really care about `real' wireless but I would really like Airport connectivity. Xircom are talking about doing this for Visor's but its not released yet.

As for MacOS X there was supposed to be an app called Palm Manager (??) that mounted the Palm on the desktop like Palm Buddy. It was talked about about a year ago before the beta came out. I am assuming it is still coming but is being saved so there are some `killer apps' to be released with the final MacOS X. They are going to need something to drive people to buy it.

Check out www.macosrumours.com maybe there is a an
Apple sub notebook in your future ?
