Apple previews new AOL messaging: iChat

updated 03:15 pm EDT, Mon May 6, 2002

Apple today also introduced iChat, a new AIM-compatible instant messaging client with an Aqua interface that will be integrated with Jaguar (the next version of OS X). It offers messaging between Mac.com members, AOL members and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) users, allowing Mac users to use their existing Mac.com names with iChat. It offers integration with Mail to display the online status of recipient's email, integration with the system-wide Address Book, "dialogue bubbles" to display chats, and automatic discovery of users on local area networks.

    AOL and Apple?

With AOL so paranoid about keeping its IM system closed, does this mean that there's some kind of cross-investment deal between AOL and Apple?

    AOL

not that aol is an amazing app or anything, but why are we still stuck @ 5.0 with wintel at 7.0, probably 8 by now? maybe the "deal" that may have been made will bring OS X up to par with Wintel?

    ICQ?

iChat with ICQ connectivity would be nice. I use Fire- more networks available in one client than I need.

    iChat + Applescript?

Didn't see anything in the PR about iChat being scriptable. Is it too much to assume that it would be? I'd love to have an easy way to create bots of various sorts and Applescript is a low-threshold way to do that.

    Seems like...

This might be the reason why the AIM never got passed beta..

    About Time

I'm surprised AOL made AIM for X to begin with. Remember a few years ago, when AOL and Microsoft were fighting over compatibility (or lack thereof) between AIM and MSN Messenger - and it was clear that Microsoft would make Messenger would become "an integral part of Windows that could not be removed without great damage"? Because of this, AOL struck a deal with Apple to include or integrate AIM with Mac OS.

    yech...

i'm plagued by a poor and increasingly poorer impression of AOL. Having to identifiy them in any way with my favorite operating system is unsettling to say the least...

    Ugh

The interface looks nasty (what's with speech bubbles?!), and the fact that it only works with AIM bites.

    Re: Ugh

Not just AIM, but also Mac.com too. Which probably won't do much for most users (who here only chats with other Mac users? Not me...), but at least you don't have to have an AOL account just to chat. It would be great if you could integrate other chat services into iChat as plugins, like Yahoo or MSN.

Just because the underlying protocol for iChat is AOL doesn't make iChat identical to AIM. I don't think using the most popular chat protocol "bites" at all. This already looks like a vast improvement over AIM, especially the "local buddy list" and drag-and-drop file sharing.

I agree about the speech bubbles, though. I hope there's some way to turn them off.

    anyway...

Out of curiousity...I signed on my the new AIM with my mac.com address but was not able to see any of my buddies with it. Anyone with success?
