AOL-Time Warner merger approved

updated 12:30 pm EST, Thu December 14, 2000

The Federal Trade Commission has unanimously approved the merger of America Online and Time Warner. The $111 billion merger—the largest in history—will create a single media giant with strongs positions in the Internet, television, and printed media markets. In related news, Earthlink, which on November 20 struck an agreement to offer Time Warner's RoadRunner cable modem subcribers a choice of using its ISP, issued a statement that it will go through with that agreement, which will take effect in 2001. Microsoft ?

What about Microsoft ? I hate to see Windows CE running on cable boxes (This channel has caused an illegal operation... blah blah). Maybe AOL-Timewarner will stop MS in some areas.

how painful would it be if AOL decided that all Road Runner clients must sign on to AOL to use the internet, even with the cable modem. I think that would fall under crule and unsuual punishment.

I doubt they would do that.. I seem to recall that part of the deal with the merger was that they had to allow other ISPs to be used through Road Runner.

I'll go back to a bloody modem if they do something ike that!

BTW, I also have a digital set-top box for DTV.. and I'm not sure who provides the OS but it crashes ALL the time. So it probably is baby winblowz. Still, they've apparently engineerd it to NOT go blue screen of death.. it's black screen of death (or br.83 on the boxes time/channel LEDs).

    Censorship

Think AOL will censor the cartoon network? They have censored their own content and there is something like 73 words or something if you say in a chat room they will remove you (TOS or something similar)

What would be even worse is letting the AOL users onto the cable modem network. Hopefully they'll have the resources to preserve the bandwidth that many Road Runner users enjoy even with the influx of the masses.

Wow, the prospect of horrible slowdowns associated with the massive AOL user base sapping the current bandwidth I enjoy with my cable modem is nothing less than frightening...

Thanks for ruining my night. :-)
