An auction for an original Apple I computer, with monochrom screen and cassette player, brought in $14,000 in bids. "That's a far cry from recent years when similar machines sold for as much as $50,000," notes c|net.

    their crazy

why anyone would pay that kinda of money for something you can't really use is beyond me. But then again they probably have more money than what they know what to do with.

    First post.

    Agreed

I read that the guy that bought it was the man who made HyperCard (or something like that) so it's more of a commemorative thing.

Whatever floats your boat; if you collect computers it's a nice one to have.

    Re: HyperCard

I don't think so. If my memory is correct, Bill Atkinson was the primary architect of HyperCard, and the winning bidder for the Apple I was someone named "R. Wagner".

Some people just can't figure out anything worthwhile to do with their, money I guess, but I know any number of schools who would have loved to have $14,000 worth of new Macs.

    Prices are coming down

More evidence that Macs are less expensive than they were a few years ago.

    Re: HyperCard

The cnet article explains that this Roger Wagner guy created HyperStudio, not HyperCard. I don't know much about either thing.

If you want to hear about old Macs getting bought for huge money, just go to Wired's Cult of the Mac site, http://www.wired.com/news/mac and read their frequent articles about lovers of vintage Macs. Especially see the March 21, 2002 article called "A Mac Box Worth its weight in Gold".

    Re: Hypercard

HyperStudio was an alternative to Hypercard for the GS. Also he published Merlin 8/16 Assembler which was a great program to develop machine language programs with. Very nice to use.

Apple released Hyercard for the GS as well. I was able to see a demo of it in 1989 and I think it was released in 1990. One nice feature was that you were able to convert Mac Hypercard applications over and they worked perfectly. It is a pity that it never took off for the GS.

It is great that Roger Wagner was able to purchase the Apple I. He knows his Apples. It would be nice to see a video of the machine working.

I'm willing to sell my classic for US$ 999. And you get an external SCSI hard disk for free. Come on ! It's a bargain ! Who says Macs aren't good value ? Sold as second hand, the price remains high. LOL
