updated 12:00 pm EST, Thu December 14, 2000

An LA Times article takes a look at Netscape 6.0, focusing in paritclar on how the Mac version stacks up against Internet Explorer 5. "Netscape 6 has some improvements, but they're overshadowed by several design flaws."

    good article

well written, concise, and provided useful information...
the only thing I found a bit annoying was how there was no mention of the software being the Mac versions until near the end of the article. Not that I have a problem with the article being about the Mac versions, however for Windows users I am sure this article meant very little, and probably wasted a few minutes of their time wondering "what? side bar? IE is only a 5MB download? SINCE WHEN?"
But anyway, I just wanted to be the first to post a comment about this, haha, so thank you, take care.

The section where this article is from is called "Mac Focus".

I think this article is too much IE-centric.
Compare it with iCab: 2MB Download, 1 sec start on a G3/233, print preview, cookie management, banner filtering and much more...

    Unfortunately Accurate

Like many Mac users, I lived through the times where Microsoft?s Macintosh products were endless, steaming piles of c***. As a result, I have an aversion to anything that comes out of Microsoft. When IE 5 came out, it became my primary browser. Not all at once, but one feature at a time. I said to myself ?I?ll use Netscape for everything, except when I want to use IE?s Scrapbook?. But the more I used the two browsers side-by-side, the more my use of Netscape eroded. I would use Location Manager to toggle between my home and work Internet settings, only to find that Netscape wouldn?t clue in to the change? while IE did. The list went on and on. I hoped, in my little Microsoft-hating heart, that Netscape 6 would be (at least) comparable. If Netscape 6 was even close, I would drop IE 5 like a hot rock.

    No such luck.

    One thing missing....

I am still using NS 4.7, and you want to know why... NO SUPPORT FOR A SCROLL WHEEL (logitech mouse) IN 6.0!!!! HOw can you release a browser wihtout that. It sucks. I am going to try out Mozilla to see if it has it. Maybe it will be in 6.1

    RAM Hungry

I too was hoping that 6.0 would stack up against IE 5. When I tried it for a few days I was farely happy with it, until I noticed it's set to run on 45 MB of RAM! Why don't they release a version without all the stuff I don't need. I don't use composer or Netscape's mail app, I just want a fast, efficient, standards conforming, bugless browser. Sorry Netscape, maybe next time.

    command -L

I have tried 6.0 and was disappointed that my old standby command - L to quickly load a url now opens a panel that defaults to opening a composer window. I have to paste or type the url in and then use the mouse to switch to navigator window, thus using the same amount of work as opening a new window and stopping the homepage load and then typing the url in manually. It should at least default to navigator.

    Standards?

So far as I'm concerned as a web developer, the only reason for Navigator to exist is to perfectly implement standards such as ECMAScript and the DOM and so raise the bar for other companies writing browsers. Netscape has failed; some suggest they have willfully failed in an effort to push the software out the door. I will occasionally write nonstandard JScript to support Explorer users; I certainly won't bother for Navigator/iCab/Opera/WebTV. You can't out-compete a monopoly if your product is inferior!
