Bleu Rose is offering free licenses to users of their software -- Black & Bleu -- that can find any error codes not included in the software. Version 5.1 includes almost 6000 error codes with detailed explinations for almost all Apple applications.

    This is dumb

Considering you can run the program three times before it shuts it self off it would be hard to find out if you actually have an error code that is not listed. Furthermore this company had a mission statement for a while claiming that MacOSX was too hard to program with and they would not be releasing software for OSX. They complained that they could not make a reliable version. This is ridiculous because thousands of other companies have made much more complicated software. The second reason they are not great people is their anti-hack system puts a fake ivisible icon file on your desktop or hard drive, sometimes multiple times and is very difficult to remove and it crashes any icon editor (and effectively the computer). Lame way to deal with the problem, and a whiney company. Not worth the effort.

    Here is the text

Partial text of their stupid OSX policy: "We have now spent more time (and therefore money) working on a carbonized version of Black & Bleu™ than we did developing v1.0 of the product. And our customers have told us it wasn't worth it. If you disagree, let us know. But before you write, ask yourself the following question: "Would I pay an upgrade fee if the only new feature offered was 'Now Mac OS X native'?". Your answer could be quite revealing. Send your comments to: info@bleurose.com Once we are satisfied that the underlying system architecture is stable and "finalized" (no more than 2 OS updates per year and absolutely NO CarbonLib changes in between), we will attempt to create a functional native (carbonized) version of Black & Bleu™ - not before. Based on what follows, we still consider Mac OS X as "experimental". We will continue to describe Mac OS X as "experimental" until such time as a realistic way to back up all of the files on the computer becomes available. We define realistic as a method to copy the contents of all disks onto removable media and put the contents back again with nothing missing. The computer must be fully functional at the end of the process. As of this writing (February, 2002) Apple (or through Apple's help, any non-Apple vendor) has failed to provide any way to reliably protect yourself from data loss when using Mac OS X." Read more in their OSX advisory file with the program. LAME.

    Bad Business Model

Apparently their business model isn't working out for them too much, if they have decided to give away the license (not enough real sales)

But It seems they are still sticking with trying to get payment for something that should be free to every mac user, and are giving away the os 9 version check demand for os x development (where error code lookups aren't nearly as necessary at all)

I think David Pogues OS X Missing Manual lists all the classic error codes, and the extended codes harder to find in the cheaper and free 'error code' apps that merly match a name to a number. And at the cost of a Black and Bleu license, you get a very useful book thrown in.
