Sony Vaio desktop vs iMac comparison

Sony's Vaio desktop edges out the iMac in Popular Science's latest head-to-head computer shootout: "Both systems deliver on the digital hub claim. If price were no object, which would I rather have in my home? The Sony, because it's a better-rounded system for the digital content that matters to me."

    Nuts to that

I wonder how closely this guy actually used the different software bundled with the hardware for the Sony and the Mac. I've used a number of Vaios, and I've always thought that while the hardware is sometimes quite impressive, the software bundles have been just awful. Especially compared to what you get on a Mac with iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, etc.

    $1600

I'm not a photo guy, but I do think iPhoto needs a 2.0 upgrade.

What I noticed was that it was a $3400 Vaio compared to the $1800 iMac. First of all, isn't it a nice change to be the machine that gets almost as many points and costs half as much? That's a big switch for Mac head-to-head reviews.

But... I wonder how it would compare to a pro tower or if you added an iBook? How about if you bought a retail copy of photoshop? A CD label printer? There's a lot you can do to spruce up a system if you have a cool extra $1600 in your pocket, especially since it's currently 40 points to 42 points with the Vaio.

    WTF?

Did this guy even USE the iMac? Sounds like a typical Windows drone to me.

How can editing a movie be easier on the Vaio? Ripping a CD? Watching a movie?

This guy doesn't seem to have used the same iApps that I have, or else he would have given the iMac a clear advantage.

Popular Science is for gearhead laymen who equate MHz to p**** size, so I'm not surprised at this review. But it still sucks.

    What?!

The reviewer gives the video editing edge to the Sony because there are more programs available for it, but fails to mention that none of them can hold a candle to iMovie (probably because he never used them). He also mentions the analog-in advantage of the Sony, but you could add that to the iMac for a fraction of the difference of the price between the two.

    Choices

The author likes the fact that the Sony comes bundled with a lot of mediocre apps rather than a few powerful, all-encompassing apps.

This has always been an argument that PC users use to claim superiority..."We have over 200 word processors, etc." It's irrelevant.

    I have both...

The Vaio SUCKS for digital video. You just can't do it with the apps it ships with. Same goes for ripping music. This article talks out of its a**.

    Not the same market

Well, let's get the first thing out of the way - $3400 for the Sony versus $1800 for the iMac. I'm sure for that extra $1600 he could buy some fancy speakers to get that sound he wants, plus an external AM/FM/TV rig. Geez.

But the more important underlying theme is this: the magazine is Popular Science. Their market is not people who want to buy something, set it up on 5 minutes, and never futz with it again. They are tweakers and tinkerers. They want to be able to grab to their friends that they have the latest high-end equipment with all the options - even if they'll never use those options.

That's where the Sony continually edged out the iMac in the reviewers mind. Where a consumer would have been confused or annoyed all the plethora of c*** that a Sony system throws at you (how many media players do you need? Image viewers? Editors?), he revelled in it. Where a consumer would have vastly preferred the simple iMac setup - he was able to gloss away the cable-ridden Sony setup because he thought of all the fun he was going to have with it.

Woe be to him when he really starts trying to tweak that Vaio. Say he tries a clean install of XP - then looks for a driver disk for all those nice input options and devices. Whoops! Sony doesn't give you one, nor can you download 'em (used to have a Vaio laptop - I know). Sony only supports re-installs made by reformatting the drive and reinstalling the drive image. Nice for our tinkerer at PopSci, eh?

The Apple is still the computer for "the rest of us". Popular Science, however, is not the magazine for the rest of us.
