German company considers ADC-to-DVI adapter

updated 03:10 am EST, Thu December 14, 2000

The MacSpecialists, a German company, is gauging public interest in an adapter that would allow older, DVI-based Power Mac G4s to use Apple's newer ADC monitors. The company notes that both Belkin and Griffin have refused to produce such an adapter, citing lack of demand, and notes that it would cost between $250-$450.

    I don't get it

Why that much?? All they are doing is adding a 28v power supply and a breakout box for the USB connection. I wish Apple would just drop the stupid ADC connector and go back to the industry standard DVI. Someone needs to knock Steve upside the head before the stock dips below 10... sigh...

    ADC converters

Just reveals what a dumb idea it was to introduce a new cable connector. Apple arrogance come home to roost. Now that salse are falling, don't expect too much more like this. until sales go up again of course...

    Quit complaining

Why shouldn't Apple bring in their own connections? If you can't afford a new computer, don't buy a new monitor. Fewers cables the better man.

Must be nice.... On my planet we don't throw out a computer that is less than a year old just because we'd like to upgrade to a larger/newer/better monitor. If Apple at least sold a video card that could connect to the new monitors, this would be less of an issue. Your type of arrogance is EXACTLY why Apple is again in dire straits (lets do it our way - marketshare and end users be damned) I bet you think we should drop ATA-66 and go back to SCSI-1 cause it's more Apple-like.

    Industry 'standards'

I too think Apple sometimes does not adopt the industry standards just to be different - some 'standards' are not that good but some of these are very good - is DVI that bad?
This is one of the main reasons why many people stick with their intel PC's.

    I don't think so

I don't really think the price would be anywhere NEAR what Belkin and others are saying... They just don't want to make one.

    ADC *IS* a Standard.

Do your research before bashing Apple. It's a standard, albeit a not very widely known standard. Just like USB was before Apple snatched it up and made it a widely known standard. I don't know the non-Apple name for the ADC standard, but I've seen these connectors places other than Apple systems.

Have faith, o ye of little faith.

    DVI is not that bad...

DVI is the same kind of digital connection as the ADC (which is why I don't understand why the adapter has to be so expensive) Apple just decided to add extra pins to carry power and the USB signal and wrap them into a (lets all say it together) proprietary connector. It was a stupid idea on the old beige A/V machines (that one routed an analog video signal and audio I/O) And it is even a more stupid idea now. Proprietary hardware is a BAD thing - remember the old Sony auto inject floppies? No one but Apple used them - a replacement floppy drive for a PC was 14.95 - an Apple floppy was over 100. How sarved would we be for add-ons if Apple had stuck with ADB instead of switching over to USB? Want to trade that RJ45 jack for an AAUI? Didn't think so. Why should we be tied to the Whims of Steve just to eliminate a stinking powercord? That is untill he has another proprietary brain f*** and abandons this new technology for something different and incompatible. Just wait - someone with a Cinema Display is gonna zorch a video card out of warranty only to be told by Apple that they don't provide "obsolete" replacement parts and no one else makes an ADC video card (and probably never will) we are gonna see the results on the 6 o'Clock News and it ain't gonna be pretty.

    Where's the problem?

Maybe it's me, but I just don't get it. You have an older computer, and you want a new monitor - you've got a VGA or older DB-15 connector, right? Well, last time I checked, there were a lot of new & big VGA monitors on the market, and the adapter to go to VGA is cheap. Worst case, you want a flat panel and have to buy a card w/ DVI - plenty of people make those, too. Just because these new monitors have an Apple logo, doesn't mean they're the only monitors you can use. You've already got a NON-proprietary connector - so use it, and stop bitching! All new machine ALSO ship with the same VGA connector.

** You've never been forced into buying an Apple monitor **

As for the buy citing "obsolete" models w/ no parts stock - last I checked - Apple maintains parts for discontinued items for 5 years... that's a long time, considering the pace of the computer field.
