ATI introduces new rebate on Radeon 8500

updated 09:35 am EDT, Mon April 22, 2002

ATI today announced a new Trade-in, Trade-Up program in North America, offering a $50 instant rebate when customers purchase either the 64MB or 128MB Radeon 8500 as well as a $100 mail-in rebate when customers trade-in an older ATI video card or any competitive video card. The promo runs for 30 days. (ATI is also offering the "Entertain Your Mac" bundle, which combines the Xclaim TV USB Edition card and a Radeon 7000 Mac Edition graphics card, for $200 as well as the "Supercharge your Power Mac G4" promo, which offers $150 rebate on the Radeon 8500 when customers return the standard video card bundled with their Power Mac G4.)

    A Bogus Promotion

This is a completely bogus promotion that does anyone with a newer PowerMac (and more importantly, a newer Apple monitor) little good. None of the Mac cards offered by ATi under this promotion come with an ADC connector. This means that if you bought a QuickSilver and a funky 17in Apple LCD display, you cannot use one of these ATi cards unless you buy something like DVIator.

    RE: a bogus promo

Blame apple, they won't allow third party manufacturers to build cards with adc onboard. The only chance is to buy direct from apple.com---and that means most users get shanked again cause they (apple) seem to ignore ATI as a OEM. (and i personally would rather have a radeon than Geforce). Thanks again apple

    misleading

Please be careful with the phrase 'any competitve video card,' as this promo gives the rebate ONLY to people who send in an ATi Radeon 7500 (Apple-supplied) or an nVidia GeF4MX (Apple-supplied).

If you have, say, a G4/400, 2x AGP, with a Rage 128 or an original AGP RADEON, this promo does not give you a trade-up rebate.

    Read the fine print!

    adc

needs to be allowed in third party non oem cards, even if the licence is strict so that only mac compatable cards are allowed to have ADC. Apple has some of the crummiest policies which usually end up shooting their customers or themselves in the foot..

    Re: misleading

Where is the fine print you mention? According to their FAQ (at http://www.ati.com/shopati/traderebate/tradeupmacFAQ.html )
    it says:
What is the ATI trade-up program?
ATI's trade-up program is a way in which a customer who has an old ATI board that is no longer supported, and those users who have a different brand of graphic card, can upgrade to currently supported technology.

Who can participate in this program?
Any existing ATI graphics card end user or anyone else with another vendors card in their machine. To ensure that you do qualify, all we ask is you return your current graphics card to us after we send you the new card. It’s that easy.

From reading that, it sounds like I could send in my old Matrox Millenium II card and get $100 off a Radeon 7000!

This sounds a little too good to be true to me though.

I think I misunderstood the macnn.com posting. I guess the tradeup program is only for the 8500. Am I correct?

    * The "Supercharge your Power Mac G4" trade-up program is available only to owners of an Apple Power Mac G4 computer system equipped with either an Apple provided ATI RADEON™ 7500 or a nVIDIA GeForce 4 MX graphics card.

So that's only on the 8500 deal. Fine print blah blah etc.

    Mac Users get shafted

I looked at the forms you fill out for the Canadian cards.

What lame excuse is there as to why the PC models are so friggin cheap and the Mac users have to pay through the nose for theirs?

    PC cards: AIW 8500 128MB $570 ($420 rebated), AIW 8500 64MB $400 ($330 rebated), Radeon 64MB $260, Radeon 128MB $400

    Macs: Radeon 8500 64MB $450 ($400 rebated), Radeon 7000 32MB $180 ($160 rebated)

Mac = lower quality, less features way higher prices????

    Re: Re: misleading

This new promo is *new*. The Supercharge your PowerMac G4 is a different promo. This new one is for "Any existing ATI graphics card end user or anyone else with another vendors card in their machine."

    * The "Supercharge your Power Mac G4" trade-up program is available only to owners of an Apple Power Mac G4 computer system equipped with either an Apple provided ATI RADEON™ 7500 or a nVIDIA GeForce 4 MX graphics card.
