Reader: ASU upgrading computer lab with Macs

updated 03:05 pm EDT, Fri April 19, 2002

MacNN reader Bill Gunty writes: "Arizona State University is outfitting its largest computer lab with G4 iMacs. In that lab there are currently half dell, and half PowerMac 4400s and 7300s. All the PowerMacs are being replaced with brand new G4 iMacs--all together, around 75. ASU also has another computer lab that has 50 indigo iMacs in it. This is not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but it is a big deal to ASU students and it also shows that colleges do use Macs."

    Macs and Engineering

While this is encouraging, in my dept. (Elect Eng) I am one of only 3 profs who still hold out using Mac. The reason: MATLAB. For better or worse, MATLAB s quickly becoming a tool of choice, but for whatever reason the Mathworks does not support the Mac platform, even under LinuxPPC or Yellow Dog Linux (they do support Linux on Intel boxes, however). Our research agencies and the companies recruiting our students often want MATLAB as a tool or else MATLAB skills, and our college has made MATLAB a standard part of our computing software for incoming freshmen.

While (free) Scilab and Octave can run under fink-installation with developer tools, and (commercial) mathematica provide support for scientific applications, it is a disappointment to see that the MathWorks has abandoned this platform with (apparently) no plans to come back.

    we have ibooks here

At Winona State University (MN) we have to lease laptops from the U and wouldn't ya know that they give out the latest ibooks every year right alone with Gateways. Also, like some places I know they don't push the PC on people. They let us make our own choices and offers the software for both platforms. My 2 year lease is up this semester and I am getting one of those new iBooks after the summer. Can't Wait :)

    GSU is good, too

My school, Georgia Southern University, has a lot of Macs. My major (Printing Management) has two labs--25 G4's in one lab and about 20 iMac's in the other.

Our library is surprisingly well-equipped, too. In addition to the 200 or so Dells and Gateways, they have 15 G3's and about 30 G4's, including 8 new Quicksilvers. Each is loaded with a full complement of Adobe and Quark software. I'm always amazed at how people will be waiting in line to use a PC when barely any of the Macs are being used.

    So is CU Boulder

The University of Colorado - Boulder is about 50/50 Macs and PCs. Full support for both platforms is official policy there.

    iMacs @ ASU

I'm very glad to hear this news. The commons lab already has a nice G4 lab set up with Cinema Displays and is in general a very pro Apple university. Go Devils!!

    Macs at UW

Here in Seattle, we just got about 50 new PowerMac 933s with a gig of RAM and 17" studio displays for the main library. Sadly, my department (Electrical Engineering) has no Macs to my knowledge.

    OSU

OSU = Oregon State University in this case : )

Around the time I graduated in 2000, three of the major campus labs had a good number of Macs. 1 lab was ALL Macs (though fairly old), another was about 50% Mac, 50% Windows and the last was roughly 75% Mac 25% Windows...the Mac portion comprised of 7300s and Dual G4 533s (last I heard) while the Windows side was made up of lower-end Dells. In fact all the public Windows machines were either low-end 'real' computers or stripped network terminals.

Art and creativity is big at OSU :D
    Go Beavers!

    MATLAB

They can't spell the name, but it still sounds nice. When I have to use MATLAB for my classes, I just SSH into our servers under xwindows to get it done. I'm in computer engineering at NC State, so I'll probably using it in quite a few more classes, so it'd be nice to get a OS X version.
