Morning tech news: Executives and analysts said they see small signs that the PC market may yet snap back a bit this year; Gateway met analyst expectations by posting a net loss of 39 cents a share, while Compaq posted a profit of $44 million (or $0.03 per share) on $7.7 billion in revenues; U.S. PC shipments grew in the first quarter by 2.3 percent to 11.1 million units, marking a turnaround after two consecutive quarters of contraction--Dell led the top four companies (Compaq, HP and IBM, respectively) with a 26.3 percent marketshare; and Microsoft profits rose nearly 12 percent for its fiscal third quarter, but the results missed Wall Street's expectations as it posted a net income of $2.74 billion (49 cents a share) due to several one-time charges.
